Got Flywheel Off!

I finally got the flywheel off and started cussing myself. I pulled it off because I thought the coils needed replacing 'cause it was to hard to start-but they looked new! I didn't remember them being replaced several years ago when I took it to a shop and all I remembered the guy telling me is he rebuilt the carb and adjusted the points. I was thinking all that trouble and expense (bought a harmonic balancer puller, strap wrench, and torque wrench) for nothing! No, I haven't checked the compression or spark (plugs looked to be buring right). Well, I checked the point gap and they had 15-16 thou. gap. Readjusted to 20 thou. and now it starts with one or two pulls!!! From what I understood form my manual there is not what I would call a "lock-down" screw to hold the adjustment - is that right? I still need to decarb but anytime I'm on the water I've got to fish. Anyway, I was going to do a post right after I pulled the flywheel titled "IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT" but as it turned out it was broke (point adj). Thanks to all the informative posts from you guys - you know who you are.;)

Glad you got it off and got it fixed. If it makes you feel any better I have never regretted buying a tool because I always wound up needed it again, I suspect it'll be the same with your new tools. BTW, how'd you get it off?

Re: Got Flywheel Off!

I got it off by putting a wrench on the puller (was using impact wrench) and wacked it with a rubber mallet - popped right off. I must admit it was a move of desperation and agrivation. Cussing it just didn't help at all! But you are right about the tools - I still have hopes of finding a '56-'58 Johnson 10-18HP motor at a real good price that I can do a minor restore job on, nothing major, and the tools will come in handy for that.

Don't get a '58 10. They have lousy lower units. The '57 10 and all the 18's have the same LU's and are much better. I have 3 '58 10's with no LU's on em :( Other than that, a great looking engine! :)

Yeah, that's right - I've got notes on that somewhere - weaker L/U's 'cause they were trying to save weight. Thanks!
