ok i got the info on the engine i needed....the 350 has the crank and cam in it that came in it ...its all original...i have the intake..carb..oil pan on the 350 ..from the 898 merc...i oredered all my other gaskets..for everything else..and filters..also....few questions ..what is the p/s cooler for...and do i need do anything with it before installing...what in the world does it do..whats closed cooling mean ..lol..

not trying to prove anything????bondoooooo.....if you have been following the thread...few guys asked me load the pics of the motors..so i could get any advice or suggestions...to help..ive been auto mechanic for twenty years...not boat mechanic..so i been doing research on here..hoping u guys can help...will this motor be ok to use...

Someone will correct me I'm sure but, here goes....
Closed Cooling is a system where there is anti-freeze or other coolant in the engine and is cooled through a water to water heat exchanger.....think just like a normal car but the radiator is replaced with a heat exchanger....
What you have is standard fresh water cooling, IE lake water cools the engine, and is let back out through the exhaust. The Power steering cooler is a small liquid to liquid heat exchanger that cools the power steering fluid.....what's weird is that yours looks to be on the opposite side that mine is

You will need to zip the intake and heads off replaced the head gaskets with marine ones,
and put it back together,

pretty much everything else on the marine engine should bolt onto the 350.
I hope the 350 has the port for the mechanical fuel pump. the 89 truck probably was fuel injected......electric pump in tank....not mechanical on side of engine, you might want to check that before you get too far.....

Thanks mark. Kinda figured that the closed cooling thing out. Lol. I understand now. The 350 does have the plate for a mechanical pump..just hoping its drilled out already. And the cam has the lobe to work the pump of the merc. 305. Crossing my fingers. Usually if they have the plate on block for fuel pump. It's an eccentric cam. Hoping

Yes I will first thing in morning. 89. Was round the time. They stopped putting the plates on block for access. This one has the plate. That don't always mean there's holes under there. Lol

since the replacement motor is a truck motor, you will need to change out the head gaskets for marine friendly versions, and the steel core plugs for brass ones.

I got my head set ordered. N all. My other gaskets. My thermostat. Does it need to be marine or not????..and my block does have hole for mechanical pump thank god. And lobe on cam to run it.... Core plugs u mean freeze out plugs right. Scott..???

yeah, freeze plugs as commonly known, however they won't protect an engine from freezing, they are there from the manufacturing of the water jackets, and should be changed to brass to prevent rusting. cars and truck have rust inhibitor in the anti freeze....
And also I just learned you should probably use the marine water pump too, so it doesn't rust away

not sure if a standard thermostat will fit correctly in the marine t-stat housing....probably best to use a new one anyway, since you have it apart.

You are planin on runnin this thing on the floor before plopping it into that bilge like Bondo suggested aren't you? Hate to see you go to all that work for something as simple as a rear main, oil pan, or rear core plug leak!

There is no such thing as freeze plugs. they are core plugs, used to get the core sand out after the block is cast. the got the misnomer "freeze plug" when someone leaves water in them, it pushes them out

you can run a standard thermostat (140 degree - 160 degree) if you want in fresh water, however you will need to change it yearly. however if your going this far, spend the extra $5 on the marine unit

ok cool u guys a great...im so pumped on getting my boat out...i keep seeing the forums on changing my water pump impeller...ok i know i have the water pump on the engine,,,but ive been looking for the impeller pump....i dont seem to have one that runs off a belt..bolted to the motor....so is it in the outdrive,,,????????plz...help,,
im going to change it before going on the water...its a 898 outdrive..its already off the boat..i ordered o rings gasket set for it..so wheres my impeller????? there is a power steering cooler,,,i checked it make sure there where no clogs..like old pieces of impeller..its clean just dont know where my impeller is..

your raw water pump and impeller are in the lower unit on your drive.

Ok. Got it Scott. Thanks million. I watched u tube vids on guys changing then on unit. Looks fairly simple. I been looking on I boats. And I can't seem to find water pump impeller kit on here for 898 out drive. Alpha n bravo all i see. Which kit is for mine. Are they mostly the same on all .. ????
