I decided over the winter to bite the bullet and swap out my Johnson 90 for a 1969 Merc 1000. I got the boat back a week ago with the new to me 1000. I serviced all 3 carbs. It ran like a dream on muffs, don't bother tuning these motors on muffs folks, waste of time. It took me about 45 minutes of fiddling at the dock to finally get it dialed in on the trailer at the launch. Guys coming in must of thought I was crazy, working on this old black relic on the back of my boat. I decided to take it for a 5 minute quick pass up the river. UNBELIEVABLE torque and sound, i'm proud to say i'm hooked on the tower of power, anyone who doubts these motors- do a double take, it rocked.

I am very pleased so far with my 115, it has been a long road but now I think that I can see the end of the road. With out reaching full power she is still a beast on my little boat. It is cool to see a little bass boat out on the water with all that motor. But from what I hear the towers do like the fire water.

I've been told it isn't any worse than that 90 v4 I was running which was pretty decent on fuel. I'm not in any rush on the water, I usually run 3/4 throttle anyways. I was shocked at the sound, now I know why they are so desired amongst old school boaters.

Thanks bro, one little piece is broken at the back , I have to replace the lower cowl after boating season, otherwise it's alive!!!

As a sidenote, the PO replaced the mid with a later model unit with power trim, that's why there are no shocks on it.

I have a complete spare motor that is salvageable for parts, I do have the lower cowl that is in good shape. It is Mainer grey so it would need to be painted.

I switched from a Mainer to a Merc, the Merc did not have power trim, and had the external pump for the tilt. So i swapped the the transom bracket with the mariner so that i could keep my 3rd battery in the cargo hold and not have the fluid lines to re run.

My buddy Dave owns Aim Outboard Recyclers up the road from me, he's got more parts for Merc's than you could imagine. He ships to the US too, he's a well known race builder , dabbles in the old but mainly the new stuff, XS motors, mark 20h's, anything you can think of Merc wise.

Where are you in Michigan? He could actually be farther south than you if you are up on the pennisula. As far as parts go there are probably at least a 100 marinas within 25 miles from my house on the bottom of Georgian Bay.Most of Ontario is like that.Almost as much water as land here.

Yeah ya gotta love the sound of the old TOP'S when you get them spun up.I'm running a 1500 right now.I picked up a 150 V6,but I'm still not sure if I want to pull the old Tower off.

Do you know Kirk that used to own Carlton Place Marine?I got buddies up in MacDonalds Corners that used to buy sleds from him.

Re: Got my inline dialed in tonight '69 Merc 1000

I've been to CP marine a couple times for misc stuff. I've used Mike's , John's, CP, black corners for sled parts and valley small engine's for small engine/boat parts. My merc guy as told is Dave, no one around cp knows merc's like Dave and Brad do at AIM.

Might know Kirk to see him. update on the motor- it's cavitating out of the hole, gotta go up to a 21 prop, going with an Apollo Stainless prop.
