My trailer has the Posilube type setup with the zerk on the end of the spindle and the open cap with the little rubber disk shaped plug. I've had the rig for two years. Recently I did some brake work and after replacing the wheels I regreased with a gun until the grease started oozing out around the front of the hub. My understanding is this is the proper procedure for this configuration. After towing it a little over an hour I noticed the plug was puckered outward and grease had oozed out of it. It was very clearly coming from the plug itself, not around it, so I guess I need to replace the $2.98 plugs since they obviously have cracks in them. I felt the hubs and they weren't any warmer than I would expect after that tow, so I just pushed on the plugs and the pressure abated as they squirted grease like a giant zit. The same thing happened when we returned home. So here's the question. Is it just excess grease escaping? I'd just chalk it up to that and watch for it to stop within the next couple of tows, but it didn't do this last time I regreased (last summer). Maybe I just didn't put in as much grease then?

Re: Grease Escaping

I have the same exact set-up on my trailer and those little black rubber caps tend to crack and leak or ooze some grease from around them(as it heats up and expands I guess) The trailer supply places carry black neoprene "Bearing Buddy Bras" that slip right on over the end of the hub, protects the black rubber caps from damage/sunlight UV/leakage. Also acts as a second water seal for black rubber caps. 2 Bras, about $3, work real nice!....Go get 'em, and I won't tell your wife you're out blowing money on those stupid boats again!

She doesn't mind my spending money on that stupid boat. That's the one I bought for her!:p

Sounds like you had an air pocket in the grease. As long as the hubs aren't too hot I say its ok. Of course, it is HOT here in Hot Springs, so that probably aint helping too much. I thought we were gonna get some rain this morning, but I think it went up towards your way. Send it back would ya??

We didn't get it either, scoyt. Thought you guys took it from us. The hubs are getting warm, but I can hold my hand on them indefinitely and I'm pretty sure they're well within acceptable operating temp, especially with brakes and accounting for the brutal heat on Saturday. By the way, if you're ever on Catherine and the gas dock at the state park looks like someone ran a party barge into it at WOT my wife knows nothing about it.

You ain't kidding. We usually go there and hang at the sandbar because there's generally a pretty good contingent of kids the admiral jr.'s age. Also, our friends have a lake house in Diamondhead that's ours if they're not there. Can't beat that. We've gotten to know quite a few people on that little lake. I've caught a few cats on it, but don't really fish it to speak of.

Yeah, I hear the sandbar is a good hang-out place. Diamondhead is nice. I have caught a few Walleye and some Bass there, just nothing of any size. Ouachita is the place to go for some good Bass. You gonna go to the Big Bass thing on the river this weekend?

No sir. I'll be back at Catherine praying the admiral doesn't take out another gas dock, although I probably don't have anything to worry about since it's likely no amount of convincing could get her to the helm again. Did spend the better part of last Friday night on the river with a couple of buddies and it was outstanding.

I am glad the lakes around here are getting back to normal level for this time of year. It is always scary being on the water when it is way up like it has been. You never know when you will see a tree floating by you, just under the water. Well have fun on the lake, I am sure there will be plenty of people around, so be careful. :)

Thanks scoyt. Will do. One of these days I'm gonna make good on my threat to harass all the Arkies on here to rendezvous on Greers or Ouachita. You'd be surprised how many of us there are.

Sounds good to me. Name the time and place! I didn't know there were that many Arkies on here, other than you.
