Grinding outdrive or tranny in gear

When I put the port side motor in gear there's a terrible grinding sound coming from the back of the boat. Not sure if it's the tranny or the outdrive or something inside the gimball.

The old boat mechanic I work with told me it could either be the bearing inside the gimball housing somewhere in there, or the gears on the driveshaft going down through the drive. Here's pics of what I have...

Any ideas?

Look like MC-1 drives to me, dont jump into the fire here. (1) First if you read the manual you'll see there is a specific shift cable adjustment required. May not be going into gear nad a simple adjustment could be a cure. (2) Those MC-1 drives have a tendency to grind on a couple teeth as you put it in gear, Mine does. When you shift it you can't baby it, you have to abruptly shift it the quiker the better. if you try to slide it into gear it will grind. (3) Check the operation of your shift interupt switches. (see manual) Go to for adults only at the top of forum and get the manual. good luck ;)

help enlighten me... you have a pic of outdrives as in i/o's and you have a pic of a velvet drive, as in inboard. are these connected together. if so, what mercrusier drive has that arrangement?
maybe use a hearing hose to help isolate the sound your hearing...

Those are definitely TRS drives. Check fluid in drive for water metal etc check trans fluid and pull the drives and look at the u-joints. And those are some heavy drives. best luck

Both of my Scarab II in my signature have this setup. 454s with Velvet Drive mated to these outdrives (i guess TRS). Is this an odd setup?

The steering is an Australian system... supposed to be pretty good I guess.

Thats what they ran on high HP in those days. Drives are virtually indestructible and trannys are solid. I know the tranny is bolted to the engine but I cant remember what is involved in removal. good luck

Haha true not in my '86 I'm not getting 71+... that is on my '83. And hopefully on the '86 soon.I have a good mechanic buddy headed over here tomorrow so I'll let yall know what he has to say about it. I will prob check fluids in the AM before he comes over.

It's so hard to stay in and work on the boat on my day off when it's 78 degrees outside and SUNNY!!! hehe

Well my boat mechanic buddy from work stopped by yesterday and said it sounded like the U joints or the bearing inside the gimbal. I'll be taking the outdrive off tomorrow and checking it out to see what's up.

Happens a lot when bellows are allowed to fail before replacing. If there is water in the bellows, better think about replacing the other one side also.
