Re: Grrrrr........ My pet peeve

In all seriousness, I think the reason for these types of questions is that many people don't understand that boats are not like cars. You can reasonably ask "is an '05 Ford Taurus a good car". But they don't realize that with boats there are so many different brands and models and power options that "is an '03 Caravelle 220 XGH a good boat" is going to be more difficult to answer. Also, many times we turn newbies away from potential purchases due to obsolete motors/drives. You don't have nearly the same issues with cars. Heck I bet you can still get most needed parts for Eagles and Renaults!

Re: Grrrrr........ My pet peeve

yeah who do they think they are coming to a boat forum and asking other's opinions on the value of a certain boat. they should stick to talking about knitting and crocheting here, none of this asking for an experienced opinion crap.
agree they should bring some information to the table as many do.

um yeah I did ask that question once. I included pictures and got very valuable answers that i would not have known without the opinions of the experienced guys here.

glad not everyone here would rather be doing needlepoint rather then talking about boats. :p

Consider it a compliment.

Now, I'm not saying that there is no such thing as a dumb question. There sure is. But consider that lots of those questions come from newbies. It might be their first post, about the first thing they were able to screw up enough courage to actually post about. Boards are intimidating to a lot of people. Tossing a softball like that out to the greybeards is one way of testing the waters, so to speak.

I wouldn't want to turn that into a bad experience, and alienate someone that could become a very involved community member. Or even worse, sour someone's new passion for boating.

Save the ones that you think are dumbest into a text file with the date and name. It might make you feel less frustrated. If not, down the road it will make for a great post. :D

LOL you know one of those things we should never admit to but.........when I was a kid my grandmother used to show me how to sew and do embroidery when I went to visit. no pictures but my mom does still have one of the things i did.

if i tried to do it now it would just be a picture of a bloody rag after stabbing myself so many times. LOL

That's the thing, people who are posting to this thread(granted, some humorous posts) appear to think this thread is "private". How many of the guys that are being quoted are reading this? We've all asked stupid questions at one time or another. Whether it was on this forum or talking to a mechanic or whoever(granted, for some, it may have been years ago). I knew someone who was a mechanic at a marina who thought people were idiots. I just reminded him, if it wasn't for those people, you wouldn't have a job..... Kinda put things into perspective....

Re: Grrrrr........ My pet peeve

As a newbie sometimes it's nice to see what other people have paid or are paying for a similiar style of vessel. I agree though that without specific knowledge of the boat it is hard sometimes for a real fair assesment and can be annoying time after time. I have been scaning the threads here for most of this summer about things that I need to learn about and most of the time can get my anser without ever having to post. Sometimes I do chime in but I try to be somewhat intelligent about the questions and subject matter.

as a forum being mostly guys, then the new people(such as myself) need to remember, guys will be guys. I work in a gold mine and the antics are all day every day. When a newbie steps into the forum he has to remember to put on his big girl panties and go with the flow. He or she will get slammed, heckled, and ribbed alot but in the end they will get the information they need. Usually by one of the crotchety old grumpy farts. It is kinda like travelling with a child, are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?

Re: Grrrrr........ My pet peeve

Why do so many people ask 'Is this boat worth this much?' or 'Is this a good boat?' How the heck would we know! We aren't there to see it, hear it, feel it, etc.

Whre's the beef? I'm sorry I had to say it. Beefer, what boat should I buy? :p

I wanna buy a big boat like 30' long and am wanting to save the environment and buy a Prius. Will the Prius pull the really big boat through steep mountains? Oh, and will an electric trolling motor be enough to power the really big boat across long distances since I wanna burn very little gas cuz I'm saving the environment by not burning it.

Have you considered nuclear? It burns clean, and you only need to refuel every 30 years or so.
