Ruger 10/22. After cleaning, and in the process of re-assembly. The bolt stop pin was a little tight...so I hit it a little harder. Now my receiver has a "hair-line" crack from the bolt stop pin to the rear pin that holds the trigger assembly. The crack doesn't go clear through. How do I fix it? The receiver appears to be aluminum. JB Weld? Thanks...and yea, I feel stupid

Re: Gun repair.......help.......

Sounds like a manufacturing defect for it to have cracked actually, guns are designed to be beat on to a certain extent since thats pretty much what happens every time you shoot it.

Either take it to an extremely skilled welder who knows different metals (oddly enough a really good prop repair guy might be good for that) or a gunsmith (I hate taking things to gunsmiths but they would give you good advice) any repair will have to stand up to the repeated shock of firing which will probably blow jb weld right off. Cracks on things like guns always grow, itll have to be drilled on the ends like an engine block crack I spose to prevent that, then properly welded and then ground back down perfect. May not even be properly repairable.

EDIT: I'm an idiot, guns are heat treated real specific I believe and don't take well to high heat, so welding is probably out and any cold repair probably won't hold.

Call Ruger and ask them. They will probably replace the receiver for next to nothing.

I would not hesitate to have it repaired properly just in the interest of safety.

Anyone that is a "gun owner" can UPS ship a gun to the manufacturer without a special permit. Just give Ruger a call..... who knows that lot of receivers may have been defective and they replace those for free.

Your only investment will be a phone call and shipping.

Your only safe option is replacement of the receiver. I agree with Bob. Call Ruger.

Few people realize what manufacturers will do for you if you just ask.

Ditto, Gun manufacturers don't want dangerous malfunctions to happen. I had a problem with the rifling on a 45/70 one time and Marlin replaced the barrel for free and this was on gun I bought used.

Re: Gun repair.......help.......

My dad said the pins are diff sizes (at least he thinks so) on each side (should only go in one way). I'm not sure about that.... let me take 5 steps to the two 10/22's that I have sitting in the den....

okay, the bolt pin is the large one, the two trigger assembly pins are smaller, they appear to go in either way, meaning they don't appear to be tapered. Your bolt stop pin can be galled by the slapping of the bolt, it can be burnished down to make it smoother. As for what to do.... I say nothing. There is little stress in this area... you're shooting a .22 caliber. There is an aftermarket plastic bushing that slides in the rear of the receiver that is supposed to reduce slapping against that pin... this might be a good idea if you are worried about it, as it would reduce the jarring. The rear of the receiver supports the bolt as it slides rearward, after the shot is made, I personally don't think it's a safety issue and I would shoot it forever that way.

The rear trigger pin only holds the trigger assembly in, and the rear bolt stop just stops the bolt... none of these parts are containing the burning powder charge.

Bye the way, mine has a tooling mark on the left of the receiver, between the two pins and below the bottom pin.

Keith

With sun light and a magnifying glass, I could SEE and what I thought was a crack is just the tooling mark that Keith mentioned. Thanks to all and you were all correct about Ruger being willing to fix it. That tooling mark really got me.
