Hammond Boats:Would You buy One

I have run accross a one owner 1977 Hammond 1750 boat deep vee, one owner always stored in boat house. Has a 165 merc. The boat is in fantastic condition. I found 1, 3 inch crack in gel coat on one side.
My question: is this boat just too old, will the fibreglass be old and brittle.
It is at a dealer and will gave one season warranty one the motor and drive. it also comes with a 2010, 3000lbs trailer. Were they a good boat or should I stay away.

im not 100% sure, i belive the company owner was assoc. with glastron at on point, differing opinions caused him to leave and do his own thing, i have a freind that was given a hammond, it was not taken care of at all needs trnasom, floor, probly stringers as well, overall construction appeared to be sound, i liked the interior trim was trying to imagine it all fresh and new, this example was a basket case, to this day still sits in his back yard untouched for 2 yrs since he got it. overall appeared to be a nice boat.

Doesn't matter. It's a 32 year old fiberglass boat. Brand means little at this point. It's all about how it was maintained. Check carefully for rot. As for the fiberglass....there are LOTS of old glass boat still in use. If there were issues with the glass they would have long ago surfaced. Wouldn't worry about that. What the asking price? I personally would shy away from any older I/O because catching up on deferred maintenance can end up costing you up to $2000 if you intend to pay a shop to do the work. The fact that the dealer is warrantying it is good. But, for example, if it needs all new bellows or other wear items, are they covered?

i agree w/ ez at this point id concentrate on the powerplant, the hull is what it is.

I've owned one for 16 yrs. Easy to work on and the fiberglass is extremely well built. They don't make em like that anymore Mine has the 351 Windsor always purrs and starts up. It's a rugged OMC175 hp sterndrive .Also, not a ton of electrical to deal with like the newer boats. It's always been very reliable for me.

When Art Carlson retired from Glastron he started Hammond boats. His Hammond boats were built like the Glastrons. Any I've seen or worked on were built very well, maintenance - not being done - was the main failing point but you get that with any boat. Check it over as well as you can, get an opinion from someone that knows boats and then if you like it buy it.

I'm thinking that if he didn't buy it at least by 2011 ... it's gone by now.
