Re: Hand Gun

well...
she would need to familarize herself with any handgun you decide. That means range time, not just a half an hour one time and put it in the nightstand.

you would practice on silloutes at no more than 15 feet, two shot drills to the chest.
I would say for an older person that may not be too familiar with semi autos,(even a 9mm) a double tap or follow up shot is harder with a semi than a revolver.
missing somebody 12 times or 6 times is still missing.

bullet placement is more important than caliber anyday.
the absolute best gun to have in an emergency is the one on your person @ that time..

Not having a go here by any means. Just making an observation.
These gun threads really fascinate me because they are so alien to our way of life here.
Always very interesting reading.

Scary thought huh?

Glad we don't have those kind of issues here, keep the handguns on the south side of the border thanks.

The idea of my Mother with a handgun is hilarious, she would end up shooting the cat or the neighbor or me! She has enough trouble backing a car out of the driveway!:D

I got her a cellphone for the bedside and an alarm for the house, phone the cops! They can have the VCR...we got insurance for that stuff.

I was going to comment, thought about it and decided not to....
No sense in going off half cocked...lol

Re: Hand Gun

instead of buying mom a gun, how about bringing mom out to the gun shops and let her pick up a few and hold them to see what she likes.

The bad guys don't carry firearms up North?

Cheap meds, free medical, don't have to worry about bad guys with guns... maybe all of our seniors should migrate North. :):):)

Im' gonna vote for the Taurus Judge also. You can load it with .410's and 45 long mags. And with that 1 1/2 barrel with the .410's she ain't gonna miss!

I just looked at the Taurus Judge because it sounded like a good idea. I just don't think i want to spend $525.00 on a gun that wont get shot. With that said i just opened a can of worms about how much money do you put on the value of life. I wish i could afford the higher price guns but its just out of the question for now. That was my reason on looking at the Hi-Point cheep.

I purchased a Hi-Point 9mm carbine, ed dot scope, 2 magazines, soft carry case, cleaning kit, and all for about $250 back in 2003. It is most definitely not the highest quality but for what I've paid I have put several hundred rounds through with out any trouble. It looks cool, shoots well, and is a lot of fun.

I'm a very budget minded purchaser (aka cheapskate) and simply can not afford to buy the very expensive arms. But I still like to shoot so I'll take a few hundred dollar piece to have fun with and save the hundreds of dollars to spend on my boat or ammo or maybe even save a few bucks for a rainy day.

Re: Hand Gun

Grandma may not need to initially load her gun. My mom is handicapped and sleeps with her Glock. It's loaded with 16 or 18 loads and pre-cocked. It has a trigger lock integrated into the trigger and pull is very light. With 18 in the clip she can miss alot and never have to reload.

This is not a Glock ad but for protection for the elderly the slide pull may not be a problem unless it's the shootout at the ok corral:)

Kevin ...... I think Gunbroker.com has better prices!

You got that right. My friends and I buy a lot from them and its always good prices. But the only downside is you cant check it out, how it feels in your hands, and all before you buy. I like to try out before I buy and for that the Cabellas used gun shop is really good, or any gun shop's used guns for that matter.

Glocks are safe action striker fired... they don't "****" :)

I'm a glock guy, but I don't think i'd advise 1 to a new or shy gun owner.

We have plenty of firearms, have three rifles myself.

Carrying a handgun or getting caught using one in the commision of a crime is serious business and you go away for a long time. Its just not tolerated here for many good reasons, some of my friends have handguns but owning one involves a lot of paperwork and transporting it is not easy legally...most just leave theirs at the firing range locked in a safe.

I worked in a hospital OR for 9 years, seen exactly 4 gunshot cases in that time and all were gang related. Your more likely to get stabbed here than shot by 100 000:1, 99% of all stab wounds are not fatal since a legal knife length here is too short to hit a major organ.

Its not kinder or more gentle, just more restrictive on what's legal in public. Per capita crime in my city is comparable to Chicago or other major US cities, there is just no gun crime to speak of since no one owns them or carries them in public.

Pretty simple really.

Re: Hand Gun

Here in the Maryland we might as well be in canada as far as the gun laws go. Dont' even think about legally carring a gun here, unless you have a documented death threat against you. Not every us state is free.

about your mom, A smaller caliber will be easier to aim and control. Less kick. i think a 9 mm is about as big as a .38.

Mrs. DJ and I both have CC permits.

I carry a .45 ACP. I have two. I usually carry the Kimber Ultra Carry II (mini 1911). However, being a big guy, I can easily conceal my Springfield 1911-A1 (full size), in the winter. Coats, etc. The AZ summer presents some concealed-challenges. Lighter clothes, etc.

Mrs. DJ carries (purse) a S & W .357 (hammerless) model 640. The hammerlees is very nice because there is nothing to snag on withdrawel. The revolver simplicity is something she appreciates.

Mrs. DJ is a very good shot with the .45's and more accurate, than me, with the .357 snub.

Don't mess with Mrs. DJ. She is the nicest person I know but if you threaten her, I will take you out. If I'm not there, she will happilly take you out too!:D

Re: Hand Gun

I agree with most of you. Depending on her familiarity with firearms, here is my list..from lowest set of skill to the highest.

1. Used .22 revolver. I rather have her able to hit the target. .22 have killed more people than most will believe.

2. Used .38 revolver. Either a S&W or Ruger. 4" barrel.

3. Either a S&W Sigma or a used "Glock,Springfield,Beretta,SIG,etc) pistol.

Personally, I wouldn't skimp the 50 or 100 buck to get a better gun. You will always regret it..kind of like the twofeetritis.

Number-wise the .25 Auto is the next step up from a .22. Power-wise, though, the .25 falls somewhere between a slingshot and a .22.:D

Very true..AND pretty hard to find a truly good pistol in .25

I have a original (non Interarms) Walther in .32 that was my pocket carry and I never felt underpowered with it.
