Hi Everyone,

We bought our first boat this spring. It's a 16' VIP Deckboat with a 115hp Mercury outboard.(2 cycle) When traveling above Slow No Wake my Wife gets frustrated because i can't hear what she says unless she yells. Is this "normal"? Are there any easy solutions other than Obama's teleprompter? Your input is greatly appreciated.

You have keyed into why boats are so popular.

Seriously, that's part of the game. Yours may be a bit louder being a 2-stroke, but even with a 4-stroke, that are quieter at idle but make about the same noise at WOT, you can't really have a conversation once you hammer the throttle...

that's the whole idea:D maybe some exhaust reliefs could make it work in the no wake zone too:noidea: or :music: some loud tunes, and if that don't work :tape2: just keep smiling and nod

she taps your arm and points... or yells "LOOK OUT" if you look like you are gonna hit it... otherwise YOU do the driving and she relaxes.

If you are unable to see hazards without her help then you are going too fast

Enjoy it, that is what engine are for. I am guessing it is an outboard which helps make more noise too :) Tell you to relax until you get to your destination. As for the hazards if you can't see them go slower if that is not possible then I would suggest not driving as you could get hurt and that would only make for a bad night out on the water.

Re: Hard to hear Wife above Slow No Wake. Any Solutions?

and the problem is...?

My wife doesn't like it if I talk when not looking directly at her when we're running on a plane. I tend to look at the thing I'm talking about.

As for hazards, mine helps me spot crab pot floats, etc. but she has the bad habit of either yelling "look out" or waiving her arms ambiguously (she often sits in front of the console when we are running).

Last time, whe was hollering look out!look out! and I thought I was going to hit a sunken log or a bouy or piling the way she was carrying on and the more I looked for a dangerous object the worse she got. Turns out she was seeing a float in front of us, not near, not in the path--and floats are not a serious problem. So I instructed her (as we should all passengers) never yell "look out" but yell out "crab pot" or "log" or "piling" or "bouy". And point, don't flail around like a windmill.

The solution is to get an inboard engine. I can hear my wife even at full throttle.

the deck boats dont have much of a windshield do they? I know i can converse just fine on plane as long as we are behind the windshield. now if i flip the bolster and my head is above it, game over.

It's normal. #1 reason I got an inboard, I got tired of that noise. I replaced that outboard noise with a good stereo so I can still cruise in peace :joyous:

This thread made my morning.
... cracked me up too.

That said ... no matter what boat, or how much noise, the Admiral has ALWAYS made sure she is heard. The quieter stern drive has just kept the competition at bay. ;)

And this is a problem?

For real though I find if we sit below the wind screen then we can hear eachother. Its just part of the game though. When we cruise we are looking around and not really talking.
