Re: Have To Ask: What'd You Pay for 2002 Maxum 1900SR
Sounds like a good deal. I don't know much about Maxum's but every time I see one it appears to be a nice looking boat. As an fyi we purchased our '05 Bayliner in December of '08 for $9k (quickly spent another $1k on "stuff"; be sure and prep your wife for that). The whole family loves it.
Our '05 had about 50 hours on it when we purchased it. I agree that most of these recreational bowriders aren't used all that often. We live in the land of 10,000 lakes (actually 12,000!) and we're VERY close to several large lakes. We've had our boat out maybe 6 times this summer - and that's a LOT compared to our friends that have similar sized boats.
Two last comments for you. 1) We purchased our boat WITHOUT taking it on the water or even firing the engine up. May sound stupid, and I agree that generally speaking you want to test things out whenever possible. But...in our case I felt we were getting a darn good deal, and it was the dead of winter (and I will admit I was eager to get one in the garage so I could focus on next steps). The boat was very clean, everything looked solid and I had my Dad (a mechanical jack of all trades) check it out. Long story short, this spring we took it out on the water and it's been smooth sailing from day one (except for any self-inflicted errors!).
2) If Maxum is associated with Bayliner don't let that bother you. In my opinion it's no different than Toyota making Lexus cars; or GM making Cadillacs and Geo Metros (or whatever their el-cheapo car is today). You could start a 5 page forum on the whole Bayliner conversation (piece of sh*t or solid price-point boat?). Ours certainly doesn't ride like, feel like, or have the luxuries that a $50,000 boat would have. But it floats, has a 4.3L Merc that runs great, performs well, hauls tubers and has plenty of storage and space for water bottles. And every person that's been on our boat this summer just raves about it (granted, most of them haven't spent much time on other boats). So count us as satisfied Bayliner buyers at a $9k price point (including trailer and installed GPS).
Let us know how it works out!
