After a few weeks of searching to stay below $10,000. I found an 2002 maxum 1900SR. It's got the bigger motor and not the 4 cylinder. The boat is very clean with only 75 hrs. Owner has original books, etc and hardly used it at all. Trailer is in good shape too. Book on this is:

PRICING

Low Retail Average Retail
Base Price
$8,720 $9,920
TOTAL PRICE $8,720 $9,920

Suggested List: $26,223

We agreed to $8000. Is this a good deal for a buyer? Is this a good make? Very new to boating.

Just want to add an observation - barely used at all can be worse than being used an obscene amount, because it could be due for ALL of it's servicing at once.

No other comments from other people regarding pricing and the boat's maker?

$8,000 sounds good to me.To be safe I would have a professional (can't remember what they are called)look it over.Usually costs $200 to $400 but worth every penny.

That is a good price. I bought a Bayliner same year and a 4.3 V6 for $7,000.00 and it had the Sport seating. It is a good boat at a great price. Most recreational guys use their boats just a few times a year so the hours are not really that bad.

Sounds like a good price to me if the boat fits your needs. If it's been kept on a trailer and not in the water except during use(and you have evidence), a good engine/drive inspection is probably more useful han a survey

Maxums are made by the same company as Bayliners. Many members on here are not too fond of Bayliners, to say the least. Personally, I have no problems with Maxums. 8k for an 02 is not bad at all, but the low hours, there has to be some cobwebs in the engine. The SR is a bowrider if I'm not mistaken? That would be a great boat, and by now it has done most of the depreciating in the value. I would say go for it, pending further inspection.

Thanks guys! Now I feel a little more confident. It's been hard to find a boat in good shape that the owner is not asking out of whack in this market. I am also hoping not to lose too much from depreciation if I trade up to a bigger boat later. The owner has kept it on a trailer in an RV parking. He has been using it about 3 times a year. My wife is not thrilled about me getting a boat but she too admits that the boat is pretty new. My two kids are really excited. I think the boat is the right size for now with the current SUV (MDX)I have for towing. Good for lake and perhaps near the sea shore.

It took me 6 months to convince the old lady to buy a boat. Now that we have one, she loves it (when it's running and I'm not spending a ton of money on it). Just tell her it will be good family fun, and she will enjoy. My fiancee hated boats, but now I can't go on any boat without her wanting to come.

Sounds like everything is lined up for ya... and that looks like a decent deal. Just keep up with the regular maintenance schedule and you'll be fine. Also, look everything over inside and out and question anything you don't think looks right.

I can't emphasize enough to have the owner take you out on it BEFORE you buy. If he says no, walk away.

Sounds like a good deal. I don't know much about Maxum's but every time I see one it appears to be a nice looking boat. As an fyi we purchased our '05 Bayliner in December of '08 for $9k (quickly spent another $1k on "stuff"; be sure and prep your wife for that). The whole family loves it.

Our '05 had about 50 hours on it when we purchased it. I agree that most of these recreational bowriders aren't used all that often. We live in the land of 10,000 lakes (actually 12,000!) and we're VERY close to several large lakes. We've had our boat out maybe 6 times this summer - and that's a LOT compared to our friends that have similar sized boats.

Two last comments for you. 1) We purchased our boat WITHOUT taking it on the water or even firing the engine up. May sound stupid, and I agree that generally speaking you want to test things out whenever possible. But...in our case I felt we were getting a darn good deal, and it was the dead of winter (and I will admit I was eager to get one in the garage so I could focus on next steps). The boat was very clean, everything looked solid and I had my Dad (a mechanical jack of all trades) check it out. Long story short, this spring we took it out on the water and it's been smooth sailing from day one (except for any self-inflicted errors!).

2) If Maxum is associated with Bayliner don't let that bother you. In my opinion it's no different than Toyota making Lexus cars; or GM making Cadillacs and Geo Metros (or whatever their el-cheapo car is today). You could start a 5 page forum on the whole Bayliner conversation (piece of sh*t or solid price-point boat?). Ours certainly doesn't ride like, feel like, or have the luxuries that a $50,000 boat would have. But it floats, has a 4.3L Merc that runs great, performs well, hauls tubers and has plenty of storage and space for water bottles. And every person that's been on our boat this summer just raves about it (granted, most of them haven't spent much time on other boats). So count us as satisfied Bayliner buyers at a $9k price point (including trailer and installed GPS).

Let us know how it works out!

I spoke with a marine dealer this morning that had a boat I was potentially interested in. It was sold but he did tell me that in this market unless the boat is rare or hard to find, don't pay more than the average retail value on NADA. Sounds like you are getting this boat under trade in value. Nice find.

Re: Have To Ask: What'd You Pay for 2002 Maxum 1900SR

I am really putting too much thoughts in buying a boat. I buy a car every two years and never hesitated as much because I know a good car and deal when I see one. I actually flew to N. Cal to meet a guy at the airport to pick up his Boxster after texting him the night before. But a boat is like entering into uncharted water for me. My wife gave me an ultimatum: sell the Porsche if I want another toy over $10k. $8k is where she draws the line. I like the Maxum but I am afraid it will be a bit small for the shoreline. I think the guy still has the boat since he told me he'd rather keep it than selling it for less than $8.

I am still kicking myself today after I left for vacation 2 wks ago. Before I left I found an 04 Searay 200 select w/ 50 hrs listing for $15k and 1 yr left on warranty. I offered the guy $10k and would buy it the next day before I leave for vacation. He said that's a little low and he just had it listed. This Monday I called him again if he still has it and he told me he sold it last Saturday for $10k. That really disappointed me. Now who in here grabbed that boat from Spring Valley for $10k. Oh well, maybe I should call the guy with the Maxum back.

I paid 17K for my boat in 07....2002 Maxum 1900SR, 5.0L V8 with 64hours on the motor. I love the boat! In fact, the company who sold to me had gone bye bye, but there website is still up:
