Re: Have to tell the wife eventually!!

Any ideas on how to tell her without having to move on to the boat?

I say around Christmas, when she steps out for an hour or two, you bring it into the driveway and put a bow on it. Don't start explaining or anything, and when she starts asking questions, just simply say, "wow, how'd that get here? That Santa really means business this year!"

I'm going down the channel that, tell the woman an idea and it'll get shot down; show them something material and you've got a good shot at it getting accepted.

Re: Have to tell the wife eventually!!

I was working out of town. I left on a Monday with a year old green truck. I came home on Friday with a NEW tan truck. I was drunk when I came home. Wife ask me to go to the store for something, and I told her that I wasn't driving. She said where's the keys to the truck? I told her, and the next thing I heard was the back door shut.

I heard the overhead door open, and I though &^%$ I didn't tell her I traded trucks.

20 minutes later she came back with whatever she went to buy, and said NOTHING !!!! About 10 mintes later, she said. "When were you gonna tell me you traded trucks?" I said, "Did you just drive it ??" She said, "Yes". I said, "Is it the same truck I had when I left here Monday? " She said, "No". I said, "Well if you drove it and noticed it was a different truck, I shouldn't have to say a thing!!!" She wasn't happy, but the subject was dropped !!!!!!!

(I got lucky !!!)

GOOD LUCK !!!!!!!!!!

How abot this. You keep it quiet till summer, and then one weekend you take her for a ride, and when she asks -What a heck is this? You'll reply - what are you talking about? We own it for years, don't you remember how we brought it home together?

My word, you guys are awful! I'll keep it at that. You know the right thing.. do it and grow a pair! All that time you could have spent sitting in your new boat making motor sounds, and you're hiding under the bed!

I agree. But these guys must already have big kahunas to make a purchase like that in the first place. I would never do something like that. Then again, my wife trusts my judgement. When we moved north, I signed papers on a house b/4 the wife even saw it(she did see 1 outside pic). I just described it over the phone. That was 10 years ago and we're still here. I went to buy a trailer and a lawn mower(wife knew about it) and ended up buying a new truck too. Called her on the cell phone and told her we need to go back the next day to sign the papers. She just said, "ok"(we had been looking at trucks already, although she had never seen this one). Same with my GTO. Showed her a pic what it may look like. Turned out it looked identical to the pic.

Key is, I told her right away and she never got mad once....... MAN UP!

Just tell her it's a gift from your mistress and if she dosen't think it's good enough for you then she should buy you a nicer one!

Honesty is always the best policy. You should never make a decision like that without talking to your wife first. It will only make things worse the longer you deceive her. You start doing things like that in your marrage and soon you will not have a marrage.

Tell her that the boat is for the emotional well-being and healthy family relationship between you, her and those dear children who "we won't have around forever". Slop it on pretty thick with the "big happy family in the boat" routine and you may just be able to pull this off without losing a big chunk out of your butt! I mean, what can she say if you put this spin on it? Good Luck!

It's easier to beg for forgives instead of asking permission is probably the worst advice you can give a man. Even if you're the breadwinner & make a ton of cash, not 'including' your wife's input when making a large purchase is ill advised. Even if money is tight, she'll always be more upset because you didn't include her. Been there, done that.

Re: Have to tell the wife eventually!!

I did the same kind of thing this year. Went out and bought a motorcycle. I got rid of my last bike when we got married 17 years ago. Over the last couple years I have really been getting the itch again. I even drag the wife along somtimes when I go look at used bikes. Well this summer I saw one on my way home from work and stuck a deal. Got home and wifey wants to go out for dinner. I say "Great, how about that place you like up by my office?". The place happens to be right around the corner from where the bike is. On the sly I call the guy and tell him I will pick it up after dinner. I figure she will have the whole 1 hour ride home to cool off before she gets to where the guns are. After dinner I drive over to where the guy lives, the wife is wondering where we are going. Get there and her eyes roll back into her head and she says ......

Are you ready

"I wish you would just buy one and quit dragging me around to look at them all the time."

Home free.... "Well Honey, as a matter of fact....."

What he said. I would NEVER do such a thing to my wife.

I'm the last person to give advice. But, if I was the subject of an emotional purchase I'd blame it on mid life crisis and hormones... The women folk understand that stuff... :D Complete lose of control. Once the stage is set, then let her know she (the wife) will not be competing with this mistress but enjoying her with you while you make memories together.

P.S. Don't forget to bat your eyes... :p

Re: Have to tell the wife eventually!!

the funniest thing is how many people take the goofy ideas serious.....Obviously a guy who makes a fool of his wife is a fool himself. On the other hand nothing is more annoying than when some guy spends hours of my time kicking the tires and finalizing the deal on somethung I am selling only to say "let me ask my wife" and never be seen again. If she is the boss then either decide what you can spend before you go shopping or stay home and send HER to wear the pants and make the deal.
Honestly it all depends on each situation.... I am absolutely in charge of what i spend my money on..... She has no desire to control me. There are lots of things we decide together but I make my money and I am very responsible with it and she knows that any time she feels that there isn't enough for her she is welcome to put her boots on and come work in the mud and rain and skeeters with me... :D

"let me ask my wife" and never be seen again.

She's a crutch. The guy can't think of a better way to walk away.

OR on the flipside the guys who are selling say, "my wife says I can't go lower than $$$$." (sigh)

------------------------

but hey.....clear you conscience.....give me the boat.

Your welcome.

I'm in the same boat as you are. I bought a 20' Tiara this past fall, and still trying to build up the courage to tell her.

What year/model Tiara? They don't make anything that small. At least, they haven't in many, many years. Even Pursuits (same company) aren't that small. Now way back when, slickcrafts (original company) were made that size. Awesome boats, some of the finest made IMO.

Wow, there are some virtuous people on this site!!!

It's not like he's tiger woods or anything. Realistically, it all depends on how they budget and split up their money. If they do it indepenently where they both have jobs and own bank accounts, then he's clear either way. If she doesn't work and he does, then he can buy himself toys as long as it doesn't affect the whole family (it obviously wouldn't if they've gone this long without noticing).

Realistically -- buy her the couch she wants.. then tell her that you got the boat you want too. Both are happy. Or, you could do what my wife would do and tell her that you'd told her about it and that she must not have been listening to you.. then go off on a rant that she never listens..haha

PS - I think this is absolutely hilarious!
