Hello everyone,

I have what I believe to be an old 20-30 hp johnson, I got the motor with a boat I bought and am restoring, well infact the boats all done. I'm a marine engineer in the Merchant navy and have just come back from sea and with my time off I thought i'de try to restore this old motor it looks old but it also looks solid and the compression is great. However there is no spark! I am planning on removing the flywheel in the next couple of days and mabie taking the whole thing to bits, let loose with some tools and get it looking decent and running. I am having trouble finding out the model of the motor the model ID plate has being painted over and when I removed the paint there was nothing left the only thing thats left is the number on the core in the middle (see photos) I have read through the forum and it has helped alot. Although I am a marine engineer these engines are completely new to me and although obviously I have a good idea what im doing but every engine is different and I am hoping with the experience on here someone can tell me what model it is so I can try my best to source some parts. Any tips would be much appreciated. Plus I believe this oldi has points witch im not too sure about how to check and replace those as I believe they are responsible for my lack of a spark.
Any help no matter how small would be much appreciated.

Many Thanks
John

have a look at the top secret file at the beginning of this forum for tips on how to get it running. a pic of the cowl may help the guys identify what you have .

Looks early 60's. The white color indicates a Johnson but it could be a SeaKing or Gale. The carb looks like it's from a 15 (Gale, Seaking or Johnson 18. Just my stab at it. Again, the cowl would help. Regardless of which one it is it's a great motor. Good luck!

EDIT, deleting my previous comments. You have a 15hp Gale motor. Somewhere between 1960 and 1963.

Gale ? never heard of that here in the U.K. ?? can you clarify for me please :)
I will post a Photo of the cowl tomorrow sometime its nearly midnight here in england if you think that would help.
One more thing thats bugging me is the M on the silver core doesn't make any sense to me, neither do the numbers at first I thought it may

Many Thanks

Re: Having some trouble with an old motor.... when i say some.....

GALE was a division of Outboard Marine and Manufacturing. They were the producers of the more familiar Johnson, Evinrude and a half dozen other private brand outboards. Gale was division to sell to the wholesalers selling to sporting goods and hardware stores. They were low priced and affordable outboards, yet still reliable. The line was actually dubbed Buccaneer and debuted in 1950, but over the years was changed to Gale, with Buccaneer becoming a model.

I believe the last year was 1963.

Re: Having some trouble with an old motor.... when i say some.....

Done abit of looking around the M is indeed the symbol for Gale Products, I just need to find out the exact model now so I can have a manual for the parts! :) . Looking forward to this one might be a challenge especially since alot of the bolts look like they may have stayed in the exact position they were put there in 1960-63 I wish the serial number on the engine could help me link it to a particular model and year.... hmmm mabie a email to gale may help ? Do you think I will have a massive problem trying to find spare parts..... also is there a way to change it to electronic ignition or am I best sticking to the points?

All your help is much appriciated

Stick with the magneto ignition. Parts are easily had in most cases. PM me with your email address, I likely have a parts manual for you.

Okay mate, Thanks for looking although im not sure what year or Hp the motor is so it may be that it is 1959< but the other guy seems sure that its between 1960-1962. Until i find someone who can relate my serial to a model/year I suppose we can just guess

Thanks again

If F_R says it is from '60 to '63, it is from '60 to '63, trust him.

Re: Having some trouble with an old motor.... when i say some.....

I wonder if the M stands for Montgomery Ward?
Coils for the Gale 15 should be available Here at iboats. Coils for 15hp E/J motors 51-72 are 18-5181
also contact set 18-5156 fits many models 1950-1990.1.5 to40 hp.Should work on your Gale .
I think you can get reprint factory parts manuals and service manuals here at iboats.
I understand parts manual is very helpful determining Gale part numbers for BRP dealers.

Re: Having some trouble with an old motor.... when i say some.....

Im guessing your model number would be one of the following if in fact it is a Montgomery Ward model and 15hp:

1960: GG8823A Deluxe
1961: GG18737A or GG18737B Deluxe
1962: GG18737C or GG18737D Deluxe
1963: GG18802A Deluxe or GG18734C

There is also a long horizontal port just above the 'trim tab'? but i am unable to open it at this time. It also has small holes drilled in the corner is this my problem
