So I pulled my boat out the other day, 1994 Bayliner Capri 1750CU cleaned it all up, hooked the ear muffs up to it and started her up. she ran great. We planned a trip to take her into the Connecticut River for a quick run just to test everything out. After it was launched my friend said that something didnt sound right with it. At first I didnt hear it until we shut it off and started it back up. when we are going at a slow speed, approximatly 5 knots, i could hear a whinning comming from the back of the boat. I was nervous as hell that it was the outdrive. When i leaned over the edge i can hear it whinning. I was leaning more towards maybe the shaft bearing. Then it also sounded like it was the outdrive running on no fluid. When I checked it it was full of fluid. I am guessing that the line on the dipstick on the top is full right? When we brought the boat back to my house I immediatly hooked it back up to the earmuffs and ran it. I ran the boat in forward and the noice was gone but there was still some kinda noise in the engine compartment, it was almost a very faint ping. The boat has pleanty of oil, good pressure, and the temp is dead on. Anyone have any suggestions what the whinning noise is?

Could be the gimbal bearing. Pull the drive and turn the bearing. If there is any roughness, replace the bearing. <br />Yes, the mark on the dipstick is full. <br />Here is a link to the Mercruiser service manual for your drive.<br /> http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/14/14cover.pdf

Welcome to iboats! My first thought was also gimbal bearing. Follow the link that Don posted and check that bearing, if there is any roughness at all, it needs replaced. Don't just grease it and ignore it, that can be a very costly mistake. It does not take much roughness to be able to hear that bearing beginning to fail!

As Don said "Could be the gimbal bearing. Pull the drive and turn the bearing. If there is any roughness, replace the bearing. "<br /><br />Had the exact same sound last year, mid season, ignored it cause it went away.... It came back 4 or five outings later in a big way, and bam, I had to get towed in.<br /><br />Man that Don does know his stuff. As well as many other members on this board.. ;)

Okay so the bearing was definatly the problem (I'm pretty sure) I put my hand in there and turned it and you could feel the roughness. I got a bearing puller, pulled it and repalced it with a new one. Now that the new bearing is in I have a few simple questions. How can I hold the bell housing gasket in so it doesnt go back down into the billow again. This is the reason it went bad. When I pulled the outdrive the upper billow was filled with water and the bell housing gasket was down inside. Another thing, the u-joint, I wanan grease it but there are no nipples on it. It looks like there are plugs. They look in excelent shape. With there being no plugs should I just ignore them?

You need a new ujoint bellows, new install gasket set to attach the drive to the pivot housing, new ujoints (they are full of water and rust also) and probably a new seal on the input shaft of the drive. When that yoke gets rusty it eats up the seal and causes the upper to loose gear lube.<br />You also need to check the drive for milky oil which indicates water in the drive.

theres no rust anywhere on the unit. The billows are fine. Its just cause that stupid seal came off for some odd reason. everhing was well lubed up which saved me. I moved the yolk and it seems perfect thats why I was wondering if it was necessary to even bother with it. I also checked the outdrive fluid. It was changed at the time I winterized it so i knew there pretty much wouldnt be a problem. you really think I should change the billow even if that wasnt the cause of it leaking?

The "Plugs" in the U-joints should be Removed,+ Grease Zerts installed.....<br />Then you can Grease them....<br /><br />To temporally hold the Gasket,+ Oring in-place,.... A Small glob of Grease will do just Fine......<br /><br />Seeing that you Found the Actual Problem,....The dropped Gasket......<br />I'd think that the Bellows are Fine....<br /><br />Go ahead,+ Grease it up,+ Run it......

How do I remove the plug? Theres no hex insert or anything on it. Only way to take it out is with plyers. Thats okay right?

All of the 1s I've run across are threaded for a 1/4-28 Grease Zert,......<br />That's what You should find behind the Plug........<br /><br />How you get there is Up To You..........<br /><br />Vise-Grips are My Personal 2nd Favorite Tool....... Right behind the BFH, :D + It Won't Help You in this case.....

I got the outdrive mounted back onto the boat. One thing... How can I be sure that stupid hub ring gasket didnt go back down into the billow? When I slid the outdrive onto the boat it waas very hard at a certain point. I had to kick it with my foot to get it to go down, I am guessing that it was on the rubber gasket around the hub ring. Yes the spline was lined up too haha. What is the easiest way to install these damn things. I know there has to be an easier way then just musceling the thing into place.

How can I be sure that stupid hub ring gasket
Unless you use the Same terms as Everybody Else uses,......It's Hard to give Good Answers....<br /><br />Do you mean the Bellhousing Gasket,+ It's O-ring,..???......<br /><br />I use a finger full of Grease to temporally Hold everything In Place....... <br /><br />Usually,...... Things get TIGHT,.. just before it's Fully Seated,... That's where you're trying to force the Oring thru the Gimbel Bearing,.....<br />Slathing the Shaft with Grease Helps....<br /><br />Ayuh,...... I use the "Horse Kick" method to Drive it Home............

Assuming that hubring gasket is the one marked ( a ) in the drawing below, I glue them in with Mercruisers bellows adhesive. They are pretty easy to knock out of place (even when using grease) if you are not used to putting the drives on.<br /><br />
