I have a 2003 150 Johnson that I'm fighting with a idle speed and cruise speed fluctuation after taking it to dealer for service. It was brought for service because the engine would kill when engaging reverse from idle; only reverse not foward.

Well, I took it to the dealer who simply advanced the idle timing to maximum limit stop. The OB now idles at 1000 rpm and does not kill when engaging reverse. However, I now have two other problems not experienced before the service:
1.) The reverse and foward gears engage with a bang and jerk.
2.) After running at high rpm and then slowing down to an idle then in neutral, the rpm will initially run at the 1000 rpm then will slowly decrease over about 60-90 seconds to about 550 rpm at which point the OB kills. It will not restart until I pump the primer bulb.
point.

PLEAS HELP!

the big shake when you shift is caused by the higher rpms when shifting.

i'm not an expert but i think you have a fuel problem.

1000 rpms in the water is high and it should be around 700. 1100 rpms on muffs

when the engine stalls hit the primer see if it picks up. if it does you defenetly should servise the fuel system

reeldutch

Re: HELP 150 Johnson Problems

I would agree about the fuel problem plus we may have an issue with the shift interrupter switch. I would almost bet that your original problem was the shift switch was (is) out of adjustment. Idling that high is wrong. Period. Your gears will let you know soon enough when they give up.

That motor should idle low enough that you dont even need the switch.

We may have 2 seperate issues but you need to get the idle back where it belongs. If you didnt have the primer bulb issue before the dealer "improved" it, you need to find out what else he did. And then undo it.

My 1993 150 (basic same as yours) does not have the switch and idles so low its hard to tell if its in gear or not sometimes.

If it is the shift interrupter switch, could only occur when shifting from neutral to reverse and not from neutral to foward? My original problem only occured when shifting from neutral to reverse.

Its supposed to interrupt the spark to 3 cylinders momentarily when shifting out of gear (forward or reverse)into neutral. If its out of adjustment they can do strange things.

Where and what publication can I purchase for a service manual for this 2002 Johnson 150?

Try www.theoutboardwizard.com for a factory manual. Bottom of the page on iboats has Seloc manuals. I (and most) prefer the factory manual. Also you may get lucky and find one on ebay.
