There is a new stickey in "The Top Secret File" listing salvage yards, get to calling, might get lucky.

Found a used one on that auction site for about $25 including shipping. From what I can tell, that thing is either pot metal or magnesium - neither of wich can be welded - right?? And I doubt that JBWeld would hold up either.

Thanks so much. Part should be on the way monday along with the low setting carb knob that was missing for the same price that just the gear was going to cost. You guys are a great network and I really appreciate all the help.

The big news is: Took the motor to the lake today and it ran pretty smooth. Didn't run it too hard, but got it up to wot and kept it there for a little bit. Problem is (and why I didn't run it too much) that the motor (going strictly by measurements) should have at least an 18" transom and mine is only a fifteen, so I am going to do a temporary, but safe, build up on the transom to get me through the fall and then will include that in the remod of the boat this winter if I decide to keep this motor. But it did move the boat at a pretty comfortable speed (could've been faster) while sitting lower in the water by a lot (at least 3"). So it may be too much for my 1636 Monarch. We'll see after another test run with the built up transom. Anyone think I should just go with a jack plate instead??

I had a local welder make me a plate, cost me $80 and made a HUGE difference, have a look.

That looks kind of like what I had in mind. Does the aluminum wrap over the back side as well for strength?

next time you start your engine mix some sea foam in fuel before you spray it in the carb. i have the same motor and replaced some of the same things coil packs points carb rebuild kit and fuel pump and it still would not start seconds after i sprayed the sea foam and gas mix it fired right up and after adjusting the needle valves starts on the first pull every time. hope this helps. and it helps a lot for a motor that sits around a long time without being started.

+1. SeaFoam is good stuff, but warn the neighbors. It will smoke like crazy. Yeah these old OMC motors have sort of an odd leg length. At 18", they're a bit too long to be a 15" short shaft, but too short to be a 20" long shaft. As a result most folks tend to have to raise them a bit. I also made a little transom riser for my '66 20 hp. The anti-vent plate is now level with the keel (even though it looks a little higher in the pic). The steering is now lighter and I have a little shallower draft too.
