Re: HELP!! 55HP Chrysler 1976 - Missing, fouled plug problem

OK, here's the latest update:

I finally got the exhaust plate off (after a couple broken bolts and a lot of patience). The bolts were severely corroded along with the inside of the outer plate. The gaskets were very corroded also.

OK, now that I have this off, what exactly am I looking for?? The inner plate is just a piece of metal (I guess??). On the powerhead side, there is some carbon build up but nothing that looks too awfully bad. What is it supposed to look like? I really don't have any idea.

With the gaskets being very corroded do you think that shows that water was passing through?? Any thoughts?

I appreciate everyone's help.

Shane

Turtle ,What you need to do now is clean both surfaces .The exhaust plate and gasket surface of powerhead.Remove as much carbon and slag buildup as is possible and vacuum clean.Be careful not to gouge into sealing surface when removing old gasket material.A good sharp edged scraper carefully used will work good. When all of the bulk of material is removed and ceaned up I like to dress both the plate and powerhead sealing surface with a light hone to remove any high spots.Use the hone in a flat motion and not tipped on edge.Wipe clean .Before reinstalling exhaust plate with new gasket insure there is no pitting that would allow poor seal or leak.If there is pitting that you feel needs to be addressed post back for some tips on how to remedy.
When all is cleaned up you might want to get a rigid straightedge like a small square and place in several locations across the sealing surfaces and check for any warpage or low spots that may inhibit sealing.Use a 2 mil feeler guage under straightedge contact points to check for low spots.
