Just did service...Gear oil...Impeller...Oil levels are good in the oil bag and the reserve tank on the motor is good. Battery is not charged had to jump it to start it. When boat is running a broken beep immediately starts before the motor even gets warm. Not sure where to go next.

Any suggetions?

Black Max means it's Mercury, it's big, and it's black. Other than that I have no idea what engine you have. I'll assume from clues that it's a v6 carbureted.

The beeping is from the oil alert module. It means something is wrong with the oil system or it's controls. Because you cannot know whether it is getting oil or not, DO NOT PROCEED until you mix oil with your fuel source at 50:1.

Then, in the maintenance manual, is a troubleshooting procedure for the oil system.

I might make a guess. If your battery isn't charging, fix that problem first, (after you add oil to the gas). The oil alert module doesn't like low voltage.

hope it helps

The broken beep after the motor starts is an indication that something in the lubrication system is not working or a sensor is faulty. I'm guessing from your wording that this starts after the motor is running.

It could be air in the oil system. Make sure the upper tank is full by opening the cap and cranking the engine until the oil is up to the top then put the cap back on. If that's all it is then your problem is fixed. If it continues then it's possible that the switch/sender in the cap is bad or the rotational sensor at the oil pump is bad.

The bottom line is that you do not want to run the engine until you've fixed the source of the alarm or you risk causing permananent damage.

FYI, these are not the easiest problems to solve so don't get discouraged if you don't nail it on the first go around.

I agree with j martin, make sure the battery is good, and fully charged before you start chasing things. I have had trouble on our barge with all kinds of weirdness when the battery was low or no good. Fix the battery issue before you do anything else.

Thanks guys...I suspected the Battery might have alot to do with it...I just sucked it up and put it in the shop (**** Sherr, in Norwalk) I figured it might be good to let a Merc Mech take a look.

But...the Battery thing has caused me alot of troubles in the past as well. specially since I made the mistake of putting in a new stereo that has memory, so it draws power even when the boat is off.

Pasta, that's easy, just install a cutout switch so you can completely disable the radio when you leave the boat for extended periods.
