Help an ol' fella out

Came home the other day after a 48 hr fishing trip to find my AARP membership offer in the mailbox. It was a real eye opener to have this milestone in my hands. Anyway.... I looked it over and do not see any real benefit to join. Are the discounts worth the membership fee? From what I read in the offer there is not much I use on a regular basis that is discounted. Are there any members out there in forum land who are AARP members and realize a benefit from the program? Thanks, and please don't wake me if I nod off...

Yes. The fee is not high at all and the benefits are worth it. I actually found the insurance (auto) to be cheaper with great service.

Since you "have this milestone" you should join up.

Of course there are some embarrassing drawbacks......... you will be required to wear knee high socks and shoes with your shorts in public....... scouts will drag you across roads (they get merit badges for that stuff)........... you can get a discount on depends and laxatives.......If you want to nap in public ....just doze off with your membership card in your hand and people will leave you alone....... you will find blue hair tint attractive on the opposite sex........ dinner will be earlier...... one of the best things is meeting new people.... you can meet a person at a party and meet them again every time you see them at the same party. People will not ask you to do anything important and if they do ....don't worry you will forget!

Angus - It's an American rite of passage. Although I feel they kinda rush things, you're not even 50 when it shows in your mail. In addition to the benefits (??? except for the car insurance) Bob mentioned, there are hotel/motel discounts, car rental discounts and other discounts as well. I get extra coupons at Walgreens by swiping my AARP card. There is a lot of other stuff - but I forgot.

You know you're going over the hill when restaurant and super market cashiers give you the old far... er senior discount and you never asked.

AARP's biggest benefit is the auto insurance, they have some great rates, we also get cheaper rates on hotels, especially in the well visited tourist areas, pretty substantial savings on some of the hotels we stay in. I also just found out, that with my permanent disability card from military service as well as my AARP card, I can get into all of the national parks for free and stay at any campground I want to for a dollar or less, that is right less than a buck. Besides that, I only have to pay $0.50 a cup for coffee at Micky dee's! Ya hoo!

In response to the OP. Roundfile it. I've beaten every offer with due diligence, searched out because of their preferences on matters that concern us all.

Re: Help an ol' fella out

I want to thank everyone for their replies. Since the responses run the spectrum, I think I may need to investigate for myself to see if they fit my lifestyle and convictions. At $16 total for the wife and me to join, the risk is small so I may just feel it out for a year. Gonna spend my lunchtime checking out their website and newsletter, instead of shuffleboard and snoring. Thanks again!
