There is also a new organization for us old folks, it is "The Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC)" or amac.us. They view things closer to my line of thinking, You might want to check them out also. Just a thought.

+1 .

I decline just because I don't care for their potlucks ...

Yeah, me too. I went there with an appetite and some BBQ, but everyone else just brought chips and O'douls. I was like "what the **** is this??" and left. Never again.

Angus,

I hope you make the right decision. I'm sure you got some good advice here to help you decide (and make you smile!) :joyous:

I can't help as I'm a complete newbie (albeit a 50 something newbie).

Can anyone tell me if membership is available outside of the US. I'm in Ireland.

Thanks.:)

Hi BoatThing
Welcome aboard! AARP has an extensive website that I am sure indicates membership boundaries. Good Luck!

Re: Help an ol' fella out

Since we are on the topic of Seniors....... here is a list of businesses that offer a discount for you guys:

As I was waiting in line behind an older gentleman at Wendy's recently,I heard him ask for his senior discount. The girl at the register apologized and
charged him less. When I asked the man what the discount was, he told me that

seniors over age 55 ...get 10% off everything on the menu, every day. (But you

need to ASK for your discount.)

Being of 'that' age myself, I figured I might as well ask for the discount too.
This incident prompted me to do some research, and I came across a list of

restaurants, supermarkets, department stores, travel deals and other types of

offers giving various discounts with different age requirements. I was actually

surprised to see how many there are and howsome of them start at the young

age of 50 .
This list may not only be useful for you, but for your friends and family too.

Dunkin Donuts gives free coffee to people over 55 .
If you're paying for a cup every day, you might want to start getting it for FREE.

Irish in Ireland, although I have been Irish in America and enjoyed some great boat trips in Cape May, NJ and Long Island, NY.

At just over 50 I'm not a retired type yet (nor am I a retiring type! :)) but thanks for the tip.:joyous:
