Greetings,
I have an issue that I'm trying to work through and need some clarification. I have an 05' Mercury, DFI, 150 hp Optimax and I had the pleasure of changing all the seals and o-rings in the lower unit due to a little water seen upon draining... IWhile in there, I felt some play in the driveshaft bearing, so I went ahead and replaced it. I set the race back in, needle bearing greased in the lower roller bearings to hold them, then slid the shaft into place.
I had noticed that as I tighten the shaft gear nut, by turning the drive shaft, it starts to tighten and feels like the lash from the foward gear closes so I can't even turn the shaft easily. Referring to the manual and the online diagram, I see that the gear needs (should) be lashed with a shim set. I did not remember seeing any shims come out under the bearing race, so "assumed" that assembly should go fairly easy using the same of what came out.
I can't tighten down the shaft nut without it locking up and the shaft not able to turn. Can any one who is familiar with this procedure offer a tip or two for me? I have a few questions:
Q- Do I need to purchase the shim kit, even though no shims were seen?
Q- How do I establish the lash thickness? (.005 to .045 is the spec options)
Q- I only saw a very paper-thin washer located under the shaft nut, is this in the correct place?
I do appreciate your time...
