Greetings earthlings, I bought a 2005 chaparall 180 ssi with a volvo penta 4 cycl. 3.0 ltr. not too long ago. After many weekends on the ocean, i notice the temp. guage was way beyond the mid point. Roughly on the 3/4 mark. Inaddition, with 4 adults and a full tank of gas (20 g) i got about 43 mph WTO and the rpm at 5000. Question #1; is the boat under proped? and question #2 is there a problem with the temp. guage? it has 21 hours on it by the way and everything is stock.

Your knowlege and wisdom will be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to Earth.

I would confirm the accuracy of your guages before I changed anything.
1) You could be a little high on your WOT if your tach is right.
2) Temp guage sounds good enough but it wouldn't hurt to get a reading in degrees. Did the temp run lower when it was new?

It still is new.

Take it to your leader (dealer) and ask these questions. It's under warranty.

hahahaah
now thats funny
the seawater pump is the thing with the pully and 2 big hoses hanging off the side of the front of the motor.
dont sweat breaking all the rules.
you wont be the first to get a zap :)
if DonS see's this maybe he can post a pic from the service manual. he is very good at it. I am not.

Re: help! help! i'm sinking

Here's a pick of the pump. To check the impeller, remove the 2 bolts and bracket between the hose connections. Remove the 2 hoses, and remove the 4 screws around the edge of the pump housing. Pull the housing off. The impeller will stay inside the housing. If the vanes of the pump are damaged replace the impeller. If any are missing, you are going to have to start finding them in the other hoses in the system.
If you do replace the impeller (they are good for about 2 years) get a new oring for the pump housing also and put some dishwashing liquid on the impeller to lubricate it.

Re: help! help! i'm sinking

Again i learn something new. Goes to show a brain is never full. Specially mine. To show my appreciation, i will give any of you my first born ...........umm actually i can't. Mom took her when she left. She said something about me being childish. But i don't want to grow up. I love my toys. What a gal she was.I hope she is doing well.

Anyhow another question came to mind. Is it possible to stick an 8 cylinder in a Chaparral 180 ssi and still keep it afloat? I'll keep the boat but wouldn't hesitate to rid the engine. It the only Brand/Model i like. Yes i did look at all of em.

Re: help! help! i'm sinking

Rod, the mechs. at SUN COUNTRY MARINE said, "the boat will sit too low due to the extra weight. furthermore the water line will reach the bilge pump outlet." and what are we talking about "expensive"?

Re: help! help! i'm sinking

static waterline can be overcome with riser extensions, bilge pump discharges can be easily moved.
the final drive ratio will have to be changed and the stringers and Y pipe will have to change, the 5.7 package is about 14K now but I hear romours the 4.3 and the XDP drive can be had for under 10K.
marine power makes a 180 HP 3.0 with EFI that works well :) .

Re: help! help! i'm sinking

if you look at the inboard model, easily converted to sterndrive its rated at 180 HP at the flywheel. I have installed 2 of them in 17' shamrocks with good results. if you do it in a shamrock make sure you order it with top mount rear entry starter option or you will get very good at changing starters.
