Okay guys and gals, I have a 1988 Bayliner Cobra 195. I am in the process of restoring it and getting it out on the water. I need to work on the motor but do not know what size GM motor it is. It has the Cobra outdrive (OMC). I have a GM motor, casting number is 16023638 SN V1001PJC. I got a hold of the local GM dealer and they say they cannot help because its in a boat. Any ideas?

For that year, OMC put their serial & model Numbers on a sticker on the Thermostat Housing (see pic) If it hasnt been painted over or removed etc..

see the silver sticker (may not be your color, could be yellow, etc.. )
the numbers on there are important for you to have and write down for when you need parts.

On your outdrive will/should be another plate that tells you it's serial number and drive ratio.

take a picture and post what you have ( you'll need to reduce the size a bit though )

Its a V8, there is no sticker on the thermostat cover, just stamped 7077N

Let's put it this way, it's not original. The engine would have been dark gray if it was OMC, the engine looks like Volvo red, hard to say what the blue intake came off of. The engine is too new for it to be 85 and earlier blue. Maybe from a Crusader.
The thermostat housing is the right color, at least something is original.

You might look on the back of the block, port side just above the oil filter boss and see if there is a Volvo tag on the engine.

No, thats Chevy orange.. the bolt pattern on the valve covers id's the motor as a 305-350 1986-97 if you look on the boss plate on the front of the motor, right below where the head bolts on, there will be a row of numbers and letters.. give me that, I will tell you what it is, and where it came from

I would say the original motor, if this isn't it... would have been a 5.0 or 5.7 liter to begin with, otherwise it would have been too much work and money to get this in there

The only other numbers on the boss plate other than V1001PJC is (I think, kind of hard to read because it isnt stamped hard) CJE145387

OK, that id's as a 1988 350 Truck engine making 195 horses - these engines (truck) were also sold to Volvo for use in boats - so, based on the color, that may be Volvo red, it most likely is a 1988 Volvo 350, since the year matches, it could be your original engine - whether or not this boat came with a Volvo motor would be up to the boat savvy crowd. Since records indicate Volvo supplied engines to OMC starting in 1989, it is a big shot, but this could have been one of the first ones to go in at the end of 1988 - or if the original engine failed during it's warranty period, it would have been replaced with the improved Volvo design. Or someone else did it at a later time.. its all conjecture at this point, but be certain it is a 1988 195 horse truck/marine 350 cid motor

Re: Help!!! I dont know what size motor I have

The truck engines had taller decks, thicker sleeve walls, and 4 bolt mains, normally the cranks and rods would be forged. The were considered severe duty engines, and were perfect for use as boat motors.

Ayuh,.... You were doin' Really Good, til ya got to the quoted piece,...

That's Pure Bullship, 'n is Completely False...

All connectin' rods are forged,...
Few to none are Forged crankshafts,...
None of 'em have Taller decks,... these are SBCs, not BBCs...
None of 'em have thicker cylinders,...
'n the odds of findin' 4 bolt mains is still 'bout 50/ 50....

+1, agreed. only the factory tall deck block is the GM rocket block (racing use only).

boat motors, truck motors, irrigation pump motors all come out of the same pile of blocks and heads. Same castings, etc - different cams, core plugs, head gaskets.

only difference is that some 3/4 ton and most 1 ton and larger trucks were fitted with 4-bolt mains.

I was listing things that could possibly be in a Chevrolet truck engine, not exact to year specifications for his particular motor. ( They also put this engine in the same year Camaro and listed them as HIPO motors with the same suffix code)
