I found this under my 1980 marquis freeport with a 4.3L mercruiser i/o. Bolt was very clean. But motor and bildge is oily. End of bolt is sheared off...

I have only had this boat out 5 times since I bought it. (1st boat) So im not sure if this was leftover from a previous fix, or a new problem...

I feel I should figure this out before I attempt another cruize..

My guess is some motor mount... but I can't seem to find an exact match for a replacement. I can't even imagine cost to remove the other end of that bolt.

Thanks for the help guys. 1st post!

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,.... That Ain't a Mercruiser bolt,.....

My guess is, it's somebody's attempt at a homemade starter bolt,....

Yer starter has 2 bolts, straight up from below, I'm guessin' you'll find 1 is missin',....

When ya get to the point, get New Starter Bolts, 'n nothin' but Starter bolts,...

Thx guys! Good deduction. I will check this out when I get home. Do you happen to know what I could order today to properly replace this? I see alot of different starter bolts, none come with washers like these... a bit confused I am. And some have a rougher grove surface right before the threads, unlike mine.

Those particular bolts won't need to be marine sourced. Auto parts stores will have them when you identify the bolt that's missing and give them year GM motor.

Thats the easy part, just turn the motor upside down, drill thru the stub with slightly smaller drill bit then an allen wrench, tap allen wrench in and extract the stub

SOLVED!!!

My mercruiser has a aftermarket alternator mod. The lower bolt on it was the culprit. It was a standard starter bolt that was used. With some extra washers to fill the gaps between the brackets. The part that was sheared off was sticking out of the end of the bracket. Some heavy pliers and a slight twist was all she needed to spin loose and out. I just got the bolt from autozone and i am mid fix now.

Thanks again all!!!!!
