Just kidding, but what is the fastest you've ever seen a boat sink? You tell me your stories, I'll tell you mine.

Re: HELP, I'm sinking!

hummm...

Fastest was almost instant, Lake Mc Conaughy NE, Several Years ago, North east Beach, we saw the storm coming from the southwest and pulled our boats, we asked our neighbors if they wanted help pulling theirs, one was an older boat 60's or 70's and the other was a newer 20'+ pontoon, anyway they declined and didn't think they had anything to worry about, they had come to Big Mac for decades...

First concern is they are horrible liars, if they had actually been long time Big Mac boaters they would know very well how bad things can get.

Anyway both boats were tied to anchors front and rear with the stern out(you can see where this is going), Storm hits and the pontoon is first to pull anchor, waves were probably 5'-6' and pushed the pontoon 30' up the sand beach and dry docked it, the older boat wasn't as lucky, the first big wave swamped it and split the cap off the hull and it hit the bottom.

When I was a kid we had a flat bottom drag boat (friend of ours) jump our wake and dipped one side which caused it to barrel role, it went bow up instantly but those come up easy, they don't really sink so much as the bow looks like a bobber with the motor working against it, we hooked the bow eye up and started getting it out of the water, had it back on the water later that day.

My next one was maybe 5 minutes?

So I am cruising back to the ramp at Pueblo Res. with the Ole Lady at the time and we get waved down by a mid eighties 19' boat with an outboard that will not run and they are taking on water.

I hook my tow strap on it and load 3 of the 4 passengers on board my boat and begin to tow, after a few minutes the remaining passenger yells that the boat is taking on more water at an increasing rate and then discovers that the transom is separating from the hull at the keel, we decide to pull a little faster, this works but it certainly put more strain on the transom with the outboard hanging off it, One of the passengers calls a friend at camp who gets the trailer to the ramp, when we arrived at the ramp there was very little water in the boat and I kind whipped the boat into the ramp.

By the time they got it loaded it was pretty much swamped, it worked really well even though Boats don't whip in very easily! I talked to one of the Rangers about my coming into the ramp area a little "hot" but he told me he had no issues, the guy with the trailer had informed them of the situation.

The more I think about it, I didn't realize how many boats I've seen go under...

Re: HELP, I'm sinking!

A heavy weekend long rainstorm sunk a 16' runabout moored next to us at a marina. My 18' Sylvan came awful close to going under in a very heavy 3 hour overnight rainstorm when the float switch decided not to work. That one has made me a full believer in redundancy.

Re: HELP, I'm sinking!

In June of 1988 out of Mallory Town (Canada) on the St Lawrence River. Went out around 3:00 the water and wind picked up and took a wave over the stern. (16ft boat). Couldn't get the boat up on plane to pull bilge plug. Tried to get back slowly and took a few over the gunnels and that's all she wrote. That boat flipped over like right now. The three of us swim to some island and was there for 14hrs until the Canadian Park service rescued us. The boat was recovered by the U.S. Coast Guard 5 miles down stream. Beer and lures still on the boat after they righted it.

Re: HELP, I'm sinking!

My 18' Grew had the seal fail between the outdrive and the hull at the bottom. This was a slow leak but the boat normally sat at a buoy.
I was away for a week and my neighbours described it as the boat going from looking a little low in the water to watching the Titanic in less than two minutes. Still tied to the buoy it was bobbing bow straight up. The boat was pulled to shore. Drained. and pulled out. Now the bilge pump has an auto switch.
We let it dry, pulled the spark plugs and drained the oil after hand turning the engine four revolutions. New oil and it fired up after drying. I have to admit it smokes more now than it did when it was new but it's got a few thousand hours on it so that might be part of the problem.

Re: HELP, I'm sinking!

Good stories, all. My "fastest" was watching a 56' Hartman Palmer MY run over a shoal on the Georgian Bay, Lake Huron. The boat was running at about 18-20 Kn, when it struck a submerged shoal. The shoal ripped a 30 foot hole in the bottom of the boat- the boat had enough momentum to carry itself over the shoal and un-gracefully settle in about 12 feet of water on the other side. Time from when the boat struck the shoal to when it came to rest on the bottom- about 4-5 seconds. One of those days when you wish you had the camera, lol!

Re: HELP, I'm sinking!

Years ago we were taking a ride in the Erie Canal at no wake speed (that's the limit). A tiny little 14' runabout passed us at maybe 7 or 8 mph (clearly making a wake). The boat had 6 .....er passengers in it. Father, mother and 4 kids. I swear the kids were 300 pounders and the parents were bigger. There was no more than inches of freeboard. I said to my wife that's an accident waiting to happen. Just then a 40' cruiser was coming the otrher way, also throwing a wake. The little guy took the wave head on, dove deep and fast and went straight down. The OB motor was under water and gone in a few seconds. The 6 passengers bobbed up a few seconds later. We nominated them for a Darwin award. Can't fix stupid!

Re: HELP, I'm sinking!

saw a 23' bow rider type boat sink in about 90 seconds. Stern anchored, took a ship's wake. Left about 3 feet of bow sticking straight up. Made me realize there is no time to grab anything (or anyone) call anyone or put on a PFD if it's stowed.

That is a great point about time and PFD. Most everyone I take out can swim but if the boat is going down then everyone should have a PFD whether you can swim or not. If they are not easy to get to then you won't be able to get them when needed. Don't think most people even think of that. I certainly didn't think it would be a problem till reading some of these stories.

Re: HELP, I'm sinking!

Back when the Flats in Cleveland was big time. We had the family walking the boardwalk headed to Shooters. A pocket cruiser was headed out, right at the bend with an ore freighter coming in. We could hear the crew of the freighter hollering at them, but to no avail. Not sure if it was a thruster or just the props, but the wave from the freighter put that little cruiser on it's port side in a heart beat, throwing all three young men (no PFDs) over the side in grand style. They were all OK and quickly got back on board a very low riding boat.

Re: HELP, I'm sinking!

On my honeymoon we hit a wave so hard that it ripped a 3" gash alongside the keel in my 16' aluminum boat. I didn't realize it at the time. After hitting the bi wave, we pulled into the leeward side of an island to calm my new bride's nerves. As she drank a beer, I noticed water near my feet. Figuring that I'd taken on water from waves, I flipped on the bilge pump. A few minutes later a lots of water pumped out, I looked again and the water in my boat was increasing! I started the '79 Evinrude 35hp motor and struggled to get on plane. It plowed water for a minute or two and....just....barely got on plane, allowing me to pull the boat plug. With the pump running and plug out I got my boat dried out. A neighbor then followed me back to my truck and got the boat back on its trailer. That's when we found the gash. A welder had us back on the water the next day, and we have a good honeymoon story to boot. Luckily it didn't sink or my marriage would have taken on a different tone.

Re: HELP, I'm sinking!

4 years ago, Lake of the Ozarks. Out Friday night with our bass tournament the starting Saturday morning, walking back from the dock I hear a boat come roaring into the cove( coned for no wake several hundred feet out with florescent buoys). This jack-off runs a 35' cigar boat less than 15ft away from all the docks at full throttle, floods over 100 boats. The gods gave everyone justice with him though, coming out of the cove he struck a dock and ripped his boat in half right before water patrol showed up to arrest him.

Creve Coeur Lake, drag boat struck the floating jonboat used for the starting lights  Luckily that guy was okay

Re: HELP, I'm sinking!

Mid 80's fishing Turtle Flambeau Flowage with my father. We were just off a rock ledge (part of the Niagra Escarpment) between two islands when an older tri-hull with an 80hp Merc comes flying thru at about 40mph. he sheared the bottom of the boat off starting at the helm. Driver went thru the windshield and frame, was busted up pretty badly. Boat sunk instantaneously in a cloud of spray and pieces.

Mid 90's fishing lake Winnebago, small Hydrosteam with a 150hp Merc flying along at about 80mph with nothing more than half his prop and the skeg in the water. comes past the point where we were and hits both a good sized wake and about 18" of chop from the wind. the boat did a nose dive.

Early 00's, spring white-water canoe trip. beer involved. turn corner, hit rock, tip canoe, come up with beer still in hand. My friends not so lucky, they lost their beer

Mid 00's, Bay of Green Bay, coming back from JJ's in Sister Bay. Bass Tourny in process, wind changes direction, goes from flat calm to rollers in about 5 minutes. Two bass boats take on water, tow one to shore after makeing sure the other could get started. Second boat followed in my wake

Late 08', ICW, Sarasota Bay, Manatee River, etc. Many people scuttle their boats attempting to collect insurance. Most sink within minutes

Late 08-2014 - ICW, Sarasota Bay, Manatee River, etc. Many sail boats left moored on buoys. slowly becoming nothing more than a mast sticking out of the water.

Re: HELP, I'm sinking!

Forgot to add, Dad forgot the drain plug in his Bass Tracker III about 1985. took about 8 minutes to fill up and sit on the bottom of the slew where we had it pulled up. put the plug in and fired up the bilge pump and let it run for about 30 mintues to get enough out to get the boat off the bank and out in the river to get the remainder out via the plug and then a sponge.

Lake erie 2012 watched a 23 footer sink in about 3 secs! They were anchored about 500 feet from use sunning we were fishing by the time we noticed the boat looked low in the water it was 3 or 4 seconds it was completly sunk. They didnt even know what happened. They were lying on the sun deck one minite and sunk the next scary how fast it can happen i had a hard time letting my 6 year old in the cuddy of our old boat after that to watch tv!!! You would never have time to get them out god forbid!! The best part was how they floated it again they hooked on to it with a big cruiser towed it till it come up on plane then a guy in another boat come up along the side buddy jumps in and bails the water out it was crazy lol

2013 Lake Erie, Sandusky Bay sand bar. Nice day, 3'-4' footers. Wind kicked up and some 5' crashing waves rolled in. 3 waves over the stern for this boat. This is in about 5' of water.

Re: HELP, I'm sinking!

There was another thread on here a a few years ago. Guy was on Lake Michigan with a 24' Trophy and big Yamaha outboard. It was end of season and not many boaters out. Storm kicked up and his engine would not start. He described being in the trough of some waves and other waves coming over the stern. 4-5 waves later the boat went down stern first, no time to react. Heavy outboard pulled it down a few feet below the water.

Guy described being in the water for hours. Only thing that saved him was a safety whistle. A passing boat barely heard the whistle and stopped to check it out. Those whistles are $1 at Walmart. I have 10 !
