Help me (and others) understand ignition replacement part numbers

I am getting ready to purchase some ignition parts most likely so thought I would research where to buy them etc. but keep seeing the same thing over and over so hoping someone can shed some light on why there are multiple part numbers listed for an individual part.

For example I want to get a power pack and stator as cost effective as possible (every penny counts) but when searching on Ebay I see parts with Multiple part numbers listed for the same item...where do people get these numbers and if my part is listed does that mean it will work?

Power Pack Example:
Ebay Title: Johnson Evinrude Outboard Power pack 581404, 582262, 583037, 583041, 583101
Description:
This is a good used Johnson Evinrude Power Pack
OEM Part numbers 581404, 582262, 583037, 583041, 583101, 583102, 583103, 583336, 763797
Fits 1986-1987 88-100-110-120-140-275-300hp 4/8 cylinder engines

Stator Example:
Ebay Title: Johnson Evinrude Outboard 1985-1987 120-140hp stator P/N 583013, 583118, 583669
Description: part number is 583013, 583118, 583669

Next Question is About CDI Replacements...
From CDI's website I see my part number: 113-3101
Replaces all of these:
581404, 582262, 583037, 583041, 583101, 583102, 583103, 583336, 763797, 18-5892, 9-25023

So when looking for USED parts..or NOS (new old stock) does that mean I can USE ANY of those part numbers?
I have heard the wire lengths may be the only difference...but if they are long enough should I be fine?

I may get people saying to just use the exact same part number as what is listed (listed where would be a good question as well)..but figuring this stuff out is important to me not only for the savings but so I can know what I could possibly use in a bind etc.

Thank you.

yes normally if you trust the seller.
I look up parts on marine engine . com or boats .net and they will show the original part # all the way to the current.
Yes it takes work but it saves you the big moola $

Maybe.
The part numbers are likely for different years, or different variations, or even a result of recalls and issues with particular motors (such as they might have found that the insulation will burn up if it is routed this way, but if it's routed this way then it is fine, thus there is a new part number)
If you are going for NOS, I would go with the part number that your motor requires until you can verify the differences and verify that it works.

With eBay or other situations where any Joe Schmoe can put something up for sale I would err on the side of caution and get something that is for your specific engine or is a universal part.
For instance, if your engine takes part 123A, and the universal part# 123 covers parts 123A, 123B, 123C, ..., 123Z, I would try the universal part# 123, and I would definitely use 123A, but I would not put any faith in any of the other part numbers until I tested them and verified they worked, or someone I trusted said it would work.

If that makes sense

And as always, different people have different opinions. Personally I have been burned too many times by bad part numbers, so I am more cautious when I go parts shopping. Different strokes for different folks.

Re: Help me (and others) understand ignition replacement part numbers

This is some great info so far...thank you.
It sure would be nice to have a website that shows all the different possibilities that can be used "properly"...sort of a cross reference guide for people who need to buy used and on very tight budgets.

There is quite a big difference in some prices on part numbers that may work just fine vs the part numbers the book calls for.

Re: Help me (and others) understand ignition replacement part numbers

The marine engine website shows each superceded part number so at some point it worked on your engine, if it was a poorly made part id assume its not available anymore, difference part makers have different part numbers so watch for that too. Sierras good stuff and normally cheaper.
As Mr Asa says this technique can prove wrong but it hasnt yet for me and im only lucky with woman (pretty girlfriend comes on my boat)

Re: Help me (and others) understand ignition replacement part numbers

Ok..this is nuts!

So I have spent the past hour or so going through the ignition parts I may eventually need to buy and now I am more confused than before.

below I have used an abbreviation for the different part numbers..you will see Gen 1, Gen 2 etc. which stands for Generation...could be called phase 1, phase 2 etc. but hopefully you know what I mean.

Now my questions is this..
With all the different combinations of ignition parts I could possibly have shown below (I think that number would be very high) how will I know what can be used with what? or if it will cause any issues.

Example:
can I use a Gen 1 Stator with a Gen 2 Timer Base and a Gen 3 Power Pack and back to a Gen 1 Regulator??

or do they all need to be from the same Generation? or is it all a conspiracy to confuse us so we shell out more and more money...lol

Here is my list of so called usable replacement parts...I sure wish I knew why these were replaced along the way.

When searching for the most current power pack #583101 has been in the photos twice..so I looked that one up.

It appears to be a predecessor to the one boat.net says to use.

Re: Help me (and others) understand ignition replacement part numbers

You could ask CDI or Sierra
I dont think you would have any problems using a gen 2 stator with a gen1 timing base for instance as otherwise customers would have to buy two parts when their timing base went for example and so customers would buy elsewhere.
Ive only seen companies which have monopolies do this- thats a way to upset a fella

I think I will try that...thank you, I was actually trying to research the makers of the OEM stuff but saw they were sold out in 2000 or so and figured that was a lost cause.

If I ever win the lottery I will do everyone a favor and have one of my staff (guessing I would have to hire people at that point) buy one of each and try them all out one by one just so nobody else will have to go through this...lol

p.s. If you want to send me some lotto tickets feel free...lol
