Re: Help me figure this out!!!!

Go to a wrecking yard and find a limited slip diff and replace yours.

Maybe, IF you know what you're looking for/at. But for the hassle of it versus the expense my choice would be new. Unless you're getting serious about 4 wheeling I'd stay away from pneumatic ( air ) lockers. It's just more stuff to wire and plumb. Go mechanical. Personally I like the EZ LOCKER. This is a ratchet type device in which either wheel can spin faster than the ring gear, but not slower. The downside is they do wear out. So does everything else.

Re: Help me figure this out!!!!

thanks for reply its a 20 ft renker cuddy cabin i weighed it at the truck place and boat and trailer weighs 4450. is the airlocker cheaper than the detroit thing he was talking about.

An ARB air locker is around $1,000+ install. And labor for gear work is $$$. The price of the Detriot True Trac varies but Ive seen them for $600 or so +install. Both require removal of the carrier so unless youre good at gear work its not something you can do in your driveway. Best to get on a dodge truck forum and read all about them.

I'm currently running a detroit locker and love it, I've run detroit lockers in all my fords since the 70's, driving normally you wouldn't even know it's back there I've had "0" problems with tire wear.

Re: Help me figure this out!!!!

Well I went to the same ramp today with the same configuration as I started with and with a combination of letting the air out of the tires I had 70psi in them to start I lowered to 35psi and used BitterBoater tech with the brakes and worked like a charm an the ramp was very slippery today so I know it can be done just have to let air out of tires everytime which isnt that bad I only take boat once every week or two. Just wanted to thank everyone for there help.........

Air Locker=instead of a clutch to join the two axels it used air pressure from an on board compressor. You flip a switch to activate it. They are great and you can have the plus of an onboard air compressor.

Man o man, look at all them high tech solutions to a problem us country folk would fix with a couple of sandbags in the bed of the pickup.

I'm glad someone else was thinking the same as me, if you can't move the boat forward and gain some tongue weight, then add some weight over the back wheels. I've pulled out some pretty big boats with my 4x2 Ford Ranger with no problems, but I wouldn't try it if the back end was lightly loaded.

Guys,What is an air locker?

its like a regular locker in the diferential but instead of using mechanical gears to lock the two tires together to make posi traction you have a switch that activates a compressor that pushes the gears in the rear together to make them lock both tires together. it is a great tool but very expensive I went to price and its 1000 for the locker only then you have to buy compressor then the install came to about 2500.

My 2 cents:

1. Nothing replaces the ability to power the front wheels. Our ramp is slippery and I see rear locked rigs spinning both tires all day long trying to get boats out of the water.

2. 4x4 also allows front brakes to slow rear wheels...this helps when the front tires are dry.

3. 4x4 is more than the ability to put power to all wheels, most of the time it also includes a very handy granny gear (4lo).

4. The one time you might need the 4x4 option is the one time it pays for itself.

Both of my SUVs are 4x4s and have a low range and because of all the ramps I have seen this summer and the trouble people have had getting up them I will never own another non 4x4 truck/suv. If you have the option to get a 4x4 truck that you like, DO IT.

Here is an arb locker. The copper line provides air to the piston which engages the locker.

I would say your tires are your biggest issue. The MT/R is probably the worst tire for your needs. They may look cool, but not function very well. They're pretty much an offroad only tire.. I've had very good luck with Wrangler TD and AT/S. But that's on a 4x4 in all weather conditions. You may want to look at the RT/S or something similar. Go with the largest tire that's recommended for your vehicle. A larger tire is less likely to spin as easy as a smaller one.. Also, only put in as much air as stated on the door not what's on the tire unless you tow for great distances and have lots of tongue weight. You'll get a better ride and better wear/traction. I max out my front tires when I put my snowplow on just because of the weight factor. At the same time, you can't beat a 4x4(Todays auto hubs are just fine. Push a button/turn a knob and your in and out of 4x4 mode). Here's Goodyears lineup:

Re: Help me figure this out!!!!

To find tongue weight, set your bathroom scale under the "tip up" wheel and crank her up,er,down. Crank the tongue off the ball and voila! Bathroom scale reads tongue weight. If the tongue is light, under 50 lbs or so,by moving the boat fwd. on the trailer, tongue weight increases.May be the simplest fix.

If you have access to a truck scale, you can find tongue weight by weighing each axle of your truck without the trailer, then hook the trailer up and re-weigh them. The difference between the first total and the second total (adding both axles together) is the weight on the tongue. Should be 10-15% of the loaded trailer weight.

Be careful not to add so much tongue weight that the front axle weight goes down when the boat is hooked up (but I doubt that is your problem).

Next time see if you can get a couple of guys to sit in your truck bed.

If you don't have a limited slip, the easiest is to swap the axle for one that does.
