'93 Yam 250 Blown head

Posted by lmitch55 (65.86.175.178) on September 03, 2002 at 14:09:19:

I "blew" the powerhead according to my mechanic (I'm beginning to not beleive him). The engine slowed to a stall, I cranked it till it started, it ran at 1500 fine, when I brought it to 4000 it slowed to a stall again. I started it, motored in at 1500. All the gauges were green. The mechanic said I blew the #3 cyl. He said it was overheated. I bought a rebuilt powerhead, $7,200. After 3 hours the same thing happened. The oil light was low this time, the reservoir was 1/4 full. I added 1/2 gallon of oil and the low oil light went out. I didn't start it this time, just got towed in. The mechanic said I have compression of 30 in the #1 cyl, I blew the head again. I told him it couldn't be. What does this engine do as the oil level gets low? Could I blow the head, or should there be a horn sounding. He told me he added oil to the cylinder and got the compression up to 55, he then told me to add add'l oil to the gas at 100:1 and it might lube the rings, and then compression might come back if I didn't damage the cylinder or piston. Does this sound right? Did the mechanic do something wrong when he changed the powerhead? Is there a way to test if the injection system is working? Should the mechanic be able to diagnose and fix this engine? How do I get in touch with the local Yamaha rep to find out about this guy.

http://www.yamahaoutboardparts.com/wwwboard/messages/921.html

A used or rebuilt powerhead has a warranty of 1 YEAR! Does this make sense to anyone???

: Let me tell you what is happening right now with my boat and my father's boat. First of all, my father blew a powerhead on his port engine last year. He got a NEW powerhead from Yamaha. That same powerhead blew again this year! YAMAHA IS NOT BACKING HIM!!! One would think that Yamaha would be more than happy to replace a faulty powerhead, especially since my father has spent 75+ grand on Yamaha outboards!!!

: On top of that, I blew a powerhead this week. We used to really enjoy our Yamahas but those days are changing...

I owned a brand new 1999, 150 HPDI Yamaha, after 26 hours powerhead blew, I received a new powerhead and again after 20 some hours the powerhead blew again. I ended up returning the boat and ordered another boat, back to an inboard. I did write Yamaha, but never received a reply back!!!!!
Yamahahahaha........
=======================================

http://www.yamahaoutboardparts.com/wwwboard/messages/905.html

Incredible, the stories that are coming in. I only wish I had time to transcribe the phone calls. Cheers to all, A.
===========================================
Dear Andrew,
Thank you for your email ref powerhead failures on V6 Yamaha outboards.
These motors have never achieved a great reputation for reliability, and I have heard anecdotal evidence of unsatisfactory life expectancy from them.
However, for some strange reason none of my own customers run these engines - all the big motors I look after are either Mercury or OMC. They have their share of troubles too, but are generally regarded as better than Yamaha motors.
Yamaha in general design their motors extremely well - I would suspect quality control to be the root cause of premature failure of crankshafts/pistons.

Re: Help! Mechanic says need 2nd Pwrhd in 1 mo.

Here we go again. There really are some sad and expensive stories out there, especially from small businessmen (like diving and fishing charter operators) who depend on these outboards for a living. Wouldn't I like to have a look at Yamaha Australia's complaints file for 150-2225HP 2-strokes manufactured between about 1993 and 1999. Of course, I'd probably need a Caterpillar D9 just to lift the file. Imagine if we were talking about cars instead of outboards, this would have been a Sixty Minutes story by now.
===================================
Hello Andrew,
We actually had a Yamaha 150 h.p which had 2 failed pistons. They had to rebuild the power head.
We had to ship the motor to the main island of [name of location] and then onto [name of destination] by plane.
The motor was just a bit over 12 months old and the verdict was that no warranty was available and the cause was probably water in the fuel. We had the engine head replaced and then flown back to [name of location] and shipped back here.Total cost in excess of $9,000-00.
Not a happy situation.

I don't know what all has been said here because I havn't read all the postings...

Please nobody take this personally, it is just a sad fact of some mechanics and places that provide services:

If you show any give, any consideration, any doubt, or seem iffy on something they will take you for a ride, and you have lost your ability to argue a case with any amount of strength whatsoever.

"I saw oil, I paid for Oil, yet I ran without oil"

DID YOU PUT THE 2 PINTS YOU PAID THE $6 FOR IN THE MOTOR YOURSELF?????? DID YOU EVER HANDLE THE 2 PINTS OF OIL YOU PAID FOR????? If not, then it was assumed the mech. put it in. If he didn't, then he has charged you for items you did not take delivery on....He is dishonest.

Let's cut the crap, call the better business burou, and get on with our boating fun next year.

BBB will help you out alot quicker then taking some *** to court.

PCG

Re: Help! Mechanic says need 2nd Pwrhd in 1 mo.

Here's my original post, from another iboats thread. I guess readers won't be surprised to hear the 'negotiations' with Yamaha didn't work out. Other people with lemon V6s have told me that, about 3 years ago, they changed their customer service policy (here in Aussie land.) Up till then, they were pretty good; since then, if the outboard blows up a day over the warranty period, it's 'not our problem. (Click.)'

======================================
hello all,

I have a 1993 Yamaha 175HP with low hours. It has always been carefully maintained and serviced. Recently we cooked a piston. Whilst phoning around for quotes on repair an outboard rebuilder predicted that, when the engine was dismantled, we would find pitting on the crankshaft. He was right! The pitting is on two journals only. My mechanic has refused to supply a warranty on the rebuild, if the current crankshaft goes back in the outboard. I took the crankshaft to a metallurgist for examination. He told me that the problem has been caused in the original casting. Without getting too technical, he says that spheroidal graphite accumulated in spots on the crank's surface. I am currently negotiating with Yamaha over a discount on a replacement part. If anyone has heard of a similar problem I would really appreciate a quick update from you.

Thanks in advance
Andrew
