Ok...so we have an old boat. A 92 OMC Cobra 3.0 that keeps over heating. I have heard nothing else but about this boat! We have 6 kids and tjey love to be out on the lake everyday! we cant go right now because we cant figure out what the problem is. He has replaced the impeller, it's moves, he has the thermostat out right now, he has removed the lower unit, the flapper is missing but he didn't find it or anything else in the lower unit. All of the belts are good. Oils has been changed. New plugs....
What are we missing? We are about I divorce over this..lol. Not really, but it is so frustrating.
Any suggestions woul be great.

-Are the impeller vanes facing the correct way?
-Does the outdrive supply a good flow of water to the thermostat housing? Pop it off and check for flow. The outdrive needs to be installed obviously to do so.
-Is the engine circulating pump operating as it should?
-Is the temp gauge correct? Use IR gun to verify.
-Is that missing flapper in the Y pipe?
-Impeller housing and gaskets all placed correctly?
-Impeller vent tube (small tube that connects to housing) in place and not blocked?

That's all I can think of for now :)

How can I check the engine circulating pump? Also when we tested last night we had poor water pressure. Could this also cause an overheat cituation? Yes, the missing flapper is on the y pipe. I did not locate the flapper in the lower unit. I did locate the 2 nuts that hold it on. Could the flapper still be lodged between the exhaust and lower unit somewhere causing my problem? If so where in the world could it be and how can I get it out?

there seems to be about 50 threads this year about pickup tubes and sealing related to such in the lowers of these Cobras. Check the tube and grommets/seals down to the water passage housing for integrity. There's a gasket under that housing as well.
Pic I saved years ago named Bondosflapper.jpg... haha

If you found the nuts for the flapper, then there is a flapper in there somewhere.. and you can be sure it will cause a quick overheat if it is stuck and causing a major exhaust restriction...

An easy check to do, is to find out if the outdrive is supplying the engine with an adequate amount of water.

On the thermostat housing, the hose coming from the outdrive is attached. Take this one off, start the engine, and see if a good flow of water is coming out. It should fill a small bucket within a few seconds, at idle.

REMEMBER to plug the hole on the thermostat housing before starting the engine. If you don't, water will splash out all over the place.

Make sure the odd shaped o-ring in the impeller housing is seated in the groove. Sometimes when installing the housing that o-ring will dislodge. If it does it will suck air causing an overheat. Run the engine off a hose. With the engine running that pump should shoot water out of the vent hole on the impeller housing a good 4-5 ft. If it doesn't, you still have an issue.
