I recently picked up a 1967 20 hp Johnson FD-21R. I started it up and ran it in a bucket. However I do not see any water coming out of the engine is there a P hole somewhere or does it all come out of the bottom exhaust port also there was like an oily film over the top of the water when I was running it. Any help would be appreciated this is my first boat but work on cars all the time. Has been sitting for a little bit so it’s going to be a project to fix it back up and get it running as it should. Any info or help would be appreciated thank you

A 67 doesn't have a pee hole. It is supposed to discharge a lot of water thru over the idle relief holes out the back of the midsection(black arrow). How deep was the bucket and how high was the water level? The water needs to be higher than the water pump to ensure the pump is primed. The pump is located at the top of the gear housing(red arrow)

Running in a "bucket"? That may be the problem, not deep enough in the water. See the bulge a few inches above the flat anti-cavitation plate? The water pump is in that bulge, and must be submerged before starting the motor. You should see a heavy spray of water out the exhaust relief port about half way up the backside, any time it is running.

Oil on the water is normal. It is the oil that you put in the gas. It goes through the engine to lubricate it, then out the exhaust.

The 67 model is an excellent motor if in good condition.----It should have a new impeller installed if you do not have the history on it.

Thanks jimmbo that’s very helpful. I used a 5 gallon bucket so that’s probably why. But I will replace the impeller. Is the oily film normal on older engines just from wear and tear? Also one of the clamps on the mount That holds it to the transom is Snapped off where can I find a replacement?thanks again

I haven’t taken the boat out at all yet but the gas that was currently in and that I got from the seller didn’t seem to have any oil in it just gasoline should I add oil to it?

I would dump the gas(burn it in the snowblower or car) drain the carb, get fresh gas and oil, and flush the lines until the fresh mix drains from the carb. Use a TCW-3 oil at 50:1

Regarding the transom bracket, if the casting is broken, I wouldn't be operating the engine on a boat until it is replaced, unless you want to be recovering a motor from the bottom.

It doesn’t say that the kit is for a Fd-21r motor. Will it work for it? Also is there an impeller kit

There seems to be no parts available on this site for my engine. Only 68 and up...

I hope you didn't run it on gas with no oil, at least not more than say a minute. I'm sure you know that running an engine without oil will quickly destroy it.

This is a 2-stroke engine. It is lubricated by oil mixed with the gas. The mix goes through the engine, and any of the oil that does not burn goes out the exhaust--yes into the water. That is normal and does not indicate any engine wear, as a 4-stroke might. If that bothers you, use a bio-degradable synthetic TC-W3 outboard oil. NOT car oil.
