I recently hooked up my starter because the bushings burnt out. I then replaced it and Had no problem with the boat. I noticed the next day that my tach is dead and I was getting no charge...I know, I know...Reg/rect..I replaced it and still have the same problem. Could it be the stator? Before I started I had 12.63 start and idle: 12.54, then after a 10 minute shut off I got 12.71...What in the heck does that mean? Please help me as I am really frustrated and broke.

What motor are we talking about here?? Is your tach still dead after replacing the rectifier? Did you cross the battery leads at all? How old is your battery, has it been load tested?

I would start by checking the wiring and connections, polish them until they shine. After that test the stator. Disconnect the yellow lead and yellow /gray lead at the terminal block. Connect the red meter lead to either yellow lead and meter black lead to ground to check for shorts. An infinite reading on HI ohms scale indicates the windings are good. Connect the ohmmeter on LO ohms scale between the yellow and yellow/gray. A reading of .25 ohms + or - .1 indicates the windings are good, and an infinite reading indicates the windings are open. If windings are found to have failed, the stator must be replaced.

Or if you have an ammeter, disconnect the voltage regulator at the terminal block. Run the motor at 4300 to 4600 RPM and note the ammeter reading. SIDE NOTE: Disconnect all accesories, uncontrolled voltage could damage the accesories. If the ammeter shows charge, replace regulator. If ammeter shows no charge, check rectifier and check stator windings as described in the above paragraph. The rectifier is tested with the ohmmeter on HI ohms scale. High reading on one check and low reading on the other, the diode is ok. Zero reading on both checks, diode shorted. High reading on both checks, diode open. Good luck.

Should the motor be running for the yellow wire stator test? I have a 1994 JOhnson Fast Strike 150. I actually have a Reg/Rectifier. It is brand new yesterday. I am very new to this. I have a multimeter is that ok. I need to do load test. I am just confused and upset with the money I have spent.

There are alot of places that will load test for free, Im not sure where you are from but I know in Canada Canadian Tire does it. You multimeter is fine, just set it to the appropriate OHM setting as explained. Your Reg Rect may be fine, I would test the old one and return the new one if the old one is still good, if the store allows, you may at least get a store credit. And no the motor does not need to be running, it does need to be running for the ammeter test, , between 4300 and 4600 RPM.
