hey i just bought a 18 hp fastwin motor. and it needs some tlc. it dose fire up on the first pull with the chock out and the throttle all the way out. is also sputters real bad every 20 seconds or so it sounds like a sneese...if i lower the throttle it will eventually conck out and will not start unless i chock it and pull the throttle back all the way. i also noticed in the drum i had it in that there was some oil in there i dont know where from...i also noticed that it will conck out if i push the chock back in...i pulled the plugs and they seemed really oiley so i cleaned them back off and stuck them back in fired it up and checked them again. they were very oiley again.... i just got it so i havent had much time to fool with it but im thinking the carbs need cleaning.. one more thing the guy who i bought it off of said it slips in an out of netural when you put it in reverse but it works fine in reverse at a low rpm.. it smokes really bad to any advice on what i need to fix?

Re: help with 18 hp evinrude fastwin

I have the same exact engine on my 14' boat. I cleaned my carbs and installed some new plugs in mine that was doing the same thing. I found that the air adjustment is very picky on those carbs and it has to be set just right. Some wear can be expected on a motor that old and its just not gonna run like a 2010 model. Its kinda a you get what you pay for type deal. With a little tinkering you will get it running good enough to suit ya though. O and on the oil in the water its fine. That was before the days of EPA and they are not the most efficient engines....

Re: help with 18 hp evinrude fastwin

The way I set the air on mine was I took the linkage off the little white thing at the end of the needle. I turned it all the way in til it seated. I backed mine out about 1 1/8 turn. I live in Arkansas so if your up north it will probably be about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 turns out. I pulled the plastic deal off and positioned it in the center location to where the linkage would hook back up and I could have a little adjustment either way. As far as removing the fly wheel I dont know. If the engine runs then there is most likely not a problem under there anyway. Just clean the carb good and install some new plugs. Running the old style plugs they need to be changed, in my opinion, every year as cheap as they are.
The best tool to use to clean the jets and air holes in a carb is a cutting torch tip cleaner. It has several different sized wires and all in one package. You can pick the cleaners up at about any auto parts or welding store. Hope this helps. I love my little motor, its doing me a good job now. Here is a fun tip. I painted mine black with a equipment gloss enamel and ordered some late model Evenrude stickers from Ebay. I looks like a new engine and its funny seeing people take double takes, looking at it.

You should treat yourself to the "top secret files" at the top of this forum. It will help on carb adjustments and many other topics. You need a torque wrench and $10 harmonic balancer puller, along with grade 8 bolts to get the flywheel off. A $6 spark tester would be a good investment. Be prepared to do some lower unit work and water pump impeller replacement. F-R shot you straight as usual; your motor needs a lot of work.
Good luck,
