Re: Help with 1990 90hp Force controls

Update: Last night I took the boat out on the water for the first test with the new engine/controls/steering. The engine shifted in and out of gear well, the steering felt great (as it should be), and it was pissing water like a champ. I idled around the harbor for a bit and the engine sounded good, though it did seem shake a bit at certain low RPMs. After the engine was warmed up for a bit, I tried to get up on plane but couldn't as the engine was trying to stall on me. I have not done a link n synch yet as I don't have the Tach yet and don't have a portable one so that's next on the list. I checked the throttle linkages arm was fully extended so I don't think it was an issue with the control adjustments. Also, I was able to rev up the engine with the ear muffs on dry land...so it may be having trouble with the prop under load . So my guess is its a fuel delivery problem somewhere in carb system (FYI- I was running off a full portable tank) or maybe its having problem with the prop under load. I hope it just needs the link n synch....will report back after that's done but might be a few days with the storm coming through.

Make sure the linkage is advancing the trigger all the way?

Re: Help with 1990 90hp Force controls

I installed the new tach and choke solenoid over the weekend and did some more testing, but still couldn't get up on plane as the engine would try to stall out. The trigger is advancing all the way (to the tip) so I think the controls are set up properly. This reminds me a lot of my other force engine (the one I replaced) as that had an issue with bogging down when trying to get up on plane except that engine eventually would. I think its a fuel starvation problem because when I began to stall I hit the choke and that would help for briefly, but then I just couldn't get it over the hump. Though I guess timing could still be way off (need to do next)....

Re: Help with 1990 90hp Force controls

Ok thought I would give an update on the engine.

I checked the timing and it was dead on!

It wasn't the controls because the trigger was engaging all the way at full throttle

...so I broke down and did a carb clean & rebuild over the weekend replacing gaskets & needles. I found some black particle crap in each bowl....looked like bits of foam from the housing! Well I took the boat out tonight and it jumped right up on plane to my amazement and topped out at 30mph at over 4500 rpm's (my 17ft proline is very heavy for its size)! Its idling around 800 rpm right now on my new tach, but will check it with a better one. It does sound like its idling a bit fast by ear, and the engine does have some feedback/vibration at 1000 rpms. So I still might have to play with the air screws on the carbs or the idle screw?

There is no foam left in the upper cowling/housing, so I am going to replace that next.

Anyways, I want to send a big thanks out to Frank and especially Jerry who hooked me up with the some controls and kept with me on this thread. You guys rock!

Re: Help with 1990 90hp Force controls

The black crap is probably the inside of the gas line.
Ethanol is breaking down the inside liner and delaminating the hose and the gunk ends up in te carb
At Wally World.Auto section. Fram filter, G-2 or G-12 depending on the gas line size.
Put the filter between the pump and the carb.
Replace ALL the gas lines with e-resistant lines.
Ideling in gear 750-800 Out of gear 1100?

Re: Help with 1990 90hp Force controls

Jerry - I actually forgot to mention that I replaced all the gas lines to engine, from fuel pump to carbs, and between carbs, and then installed a fuel filter between pump/carbs. So I think I should be set! I think the black crap is foam as I found a lot of the black crap piled up in the bottom of the air intake for the carbs as well as scattered around the block and inside the lower the cowling. It felt very gritty, but who knows it could also be rotted lines as well! Next up is running some concentrated sea foam through the engine to ensure that all passages are clear. The engine was idling 800 in gear and 1100 in nuetral, but I don't trust the tach on the console and want to check with the tinytach my friend has. Thanks for looking out for me!

Don't run too much Seafoam.
It can strip the oil and cause scoring.
I use Powertune(merc), or Engine Tuner(omc)
Run it per directions.
I don't like Seafoam.I think it's useless in removing carbon.

Re: Help with 1990 90hp Force controls

Your gonna need 2 cables.
On the old cables there is a bunch of letters and numbers stamped in them.
It will be the length.Maybe in inches or feet.
Make sure the length is right, too short and it won't work right.Too long is better than too short.
The connectors on the motor are different(pics. You will need them.
The shifter, might be different.Post pics.
Some parts diagrams show Chrysler/Force shifters used on the later ones.Again pics.
Profile? Location? You might be close to someone who can help.
I too have a 1993 90hp force on a 17' Rinker Captiva. I just put a new impeller kit, new lower unit gear oil, and a starter on her. She sounds as quiet as a sewing machine. However, I was out the other night and it would not go into forward gear, only reverse. I removed the shifter cable and throttle cable. I also removed the shifter itself. The cables are model number #cc17213 and are attached to a US Marine right hand shifter box. I want to replace the whole unit, cables and all. I would also like to put in new battery wires. Probably 6'-8' on those. Can anyone help me order the right stuff? I'm a machinist so doing the work is not my problem, it's getting the parts.
Thanks in advance,
Aaron G.
