First get every drop of old fuel out of it. Plan on a new water pump, carb kit, plugs/points condenser, fuel pump kit, new fuel lines and drain & refil the gearcase. They are pretty easy to work on.

Sorry, can't help with the "A". Joe Reeves is the OMC GOD here and can give you the best information covering your engine.

A new water pump and a carb rebuild, not just a cleaning, is definitely in order. A pretty easy job with the manual. SoLittle also provided good pointers. Hopefully Joe will show up soon and give you more info.

See ya around, I'm still working on my engine! :D

Re: Help with 9.5 Evinrude Sportwin

I am rebuilding a 9.5 evinrude 9822E. The problem I found was finding parts until I ran into Seaway. They are the major dealers for Evinrude as far as I can tell. You can reach them at 1-800-332-0803. Seattle, Washington.
Great people to deal with. Tell "Steve" I sent you. The parts are not cheap, but it beats buying a new engine. I have had this motor since 1968 and it is still in great shape. If I can figure out how to connect my water pump to the engine block. AAAaaarg!

Gentlemen (& Ladies?)

Deepest gratitude for your inputs.
ad4par1, Thanx for th link! (If you revisit this post,) How did you find it?

SoLittle, Understood. the easy stuff (drain fuel, regrease lower) has already been done. Will Have to order manual to follow up on others.

BobParsons, Appreciate "Seaway". I had expected that this motor might be a bear to support. Hopefully Seaway can come through.

Joe Reeves, U Out There? If I have an anomally (or not)your insights would be appreciated. Any idea what the "A" in 9622A means.

Guys,...(&gals?")
Thanx Again

Klondike (1of7)

Rolmops, Pardon my naivete but, I am familiar with appendages post initial release. Are you confidant that this is initial batch? Are there later versions? B's C's etc?
Again, I am a neophyte (and perhaps this is why) but, I'm lukin' fer that warm & fuzzy feelin' that makes gud sentz (or an authoritative and persuasive opinion that will fill in the void)) SO, r u sher?

Hello Klondike 7
Your worries are understandable and I do not like to be authoritive.
With OMC (Johnson,Evinrude)the big letter giving having to do with countries and the like only started in 1980.
In the sixties there was "E" for electric and "L" for long shaft.Other letters were batch numbers.
www.marinshopen.se/guide/guide.htm
On this page you can go to Johnson /Evinrude 1980/1998 and you will find the meaning of all the letters after 1980.
Yes there are other batches with letters, mine is an "M"

Re: Help with 9.5 Evinrude Sportwin

You need a carb kit...fuel is leaking past the inlet needle/seat...your new kit will cure the problem you mention...get the OEM if possible...NAPA should be able to order an 'after market' kit for you...many think the 'after market' kits are just fine.

PS...get a kit that includes a new float

Klondike,

You shouldn't have any trouble getting OEM parts.

The aftermarket stuff is OK however, I find their carb. kits a little confusing because they cover several different models.

You should be able to get an OEM manual, or at least a reprint, fairly easily.

Slow_Boat, djohns19,
Ordered today, 'Evinrude Service-Repair Handbook: 1.5 to 35 Hp, Ray Hoy, and Seloc Johnson/Evinrude Outboards 1956-70 Repair Manual (1956-70) Clarence W. Coles, Joan Coles.

I am not put off by Napa. Guess I'll (with my limited knowledge w/ boat motors) shop a bit. Check Napa, Iboats and a few others.

If there are any recomended sources, Id be greatful for the lead.

Again, All,
Thanx!
I really appreciate the assistance.

P.S. If anybody can offer any insights on a "'50's Lighting 3(hp)", please see accompanying post from 29-Sep. It's another hobby/project from a neighbor that my wife brought in. (maybe she,..., well any way, it's here now)
