Help with alpha gen 2 gaskets

Hey everyone-

I'm working on reinstalling my leg after a bellows job and I can't quite figure out all the gaskets. Seems like there are o-rings that don't apply, and some possibly missing?

There are 3 o-rings on the drive shaft- are these supposed to be in this kit? The new ones don't look the right size... Also, there's a large thick circular ring that I figured would go over the cylinder where the shaft is (that fits into the bell-housing), but it's not a tight fit and keeps slipping off. Is this a gen one ring that I don't need?

the thick rubber sealing ring is glued into place, not just inserted. Of the O rings, there should be: the water inlet(the largest one) the medium one for the center of the input shaft, 2 smaller ones for the grooves on the input shaft by the yoke end,, and a smaller, thinner one for the oil transfer port

Ohhh- what do I glue it with, and to where? Does it just go on the leading edge of the cylinder containing the uj and shaft? Is there a schematic I can download somewhere to see where everything goes? Thanks

A is the rubber ring, use contact cement,bellows adhesive, 3M weatherstrip adhesive

That's a great picture- thanks! So, do I just use bellows adhesive and push that rubber ring all the way up against the retaining collar for the
UJ bellows?

What about the water hose o-ring. Looks like that is also put in with bellows adhesive in the service manual (pic attached)- is that correct?

I use a non-adhesive type of silicone that dosent have acedic acid in it but adhesive to hold it in place is fine too.

Non-adhesive does sound better to me. I always worry about getting things with adhesive off, or putting them in the wrong place. When you say silicone, do you mean regular silicone caulk? Or something specific for marine?

not marine specific, you must avoid anything containing acedic acid. contact cement is fine , wont hurt nothing

OK- and just snug it up against that metal ring holding in the UJ bellows?

clean the grease off the housing area first, apply contact cement to the ring, slip ring in place and let dry.If the ring gets disturbed you will notice water entering thru the bellows vent hole.
If you ever manage to dislodge the water inlet o ring, you will see water leaking from the shift cable connection inside the boat.

I don't mean to hijack the post, but I have a question. Is gluing that rubber ujoint ring necessary? We put my friend's in without gluing it. The boat is not in the water yet. Thanks

Without gluing it in there, there's a very good chance of it not staying where it is suppose to be. I use to use a little grease to hold it in there, now bellows adhesive or the 3-M weather strip adhesive. Not much worse than pulling the drive off and have water pour out of the bellows.

I have also had gasket kits that the water passage O'ring was just a little too big and didn't fit in there well.

Ok, been thinking about it. If you need to glue it onto the bell housing, then what about the drive side?

why try to reinvent the wheel . the manual says to glue it in the housing not on the drive.there is less chance of having it get dislodged if you put it in the housing

You don't need to do anything about the drive side. The adhesive is only to keep in place during installation. After that, compression from the drive will hold it in place.

I'm sorry to keep asking the same question... I'm still unclear about placement. I am supposed to cement it into the bellhousing right up against the aluminum retaining ring for the UJ Bellows? Or is it set back a little?

This is my first time doing all of this and I just don't want to make a mistake.

Yes apply some bellows adhesive to the outside and rear/inside towards the retaining ring and slide it in until it rests/stops against the ring.

Apply some grease to the bell housing studs before drive installation. Due you run in saltwater or let the boat sit in water at a slip?
