Re: Help with potential purchase
There is a section at the top of the Johnson/Evinrude forum, called "top secret file" It covers a lot of territory on how to get your motor working.
Compression is the first thing to check (with in 10% of each other 100psi plus if I remember correctly, someone will offer up the correct number if I'm wrong) , next spark, You want a nice crisp blue spark. If you have a tester that you can adjust the distance between the contacts. It should jump a 1/4" fresh gas is important. 50:1 mix. tcw 3 oil. Drain and replaced lower unit.
If you're in a rush napa can order your impeller, they usually get it the next day. Throw iboats store a bone and buy something from them, It makes this forum possible. Prices are competitive, although I've found cheaper, I buy from here every once and a while outta guilt.
Compression and spark are the first step, like any other motor if you got these two you're left with fuel. And that could be a number of things.
For each thing you run into, the topics have been beaten to death on here especially for such a popular motor. Use the search option and read up on each element you are trying to check or troubleshoot. Try to focus on one thing at a time. Take pictures as you disassemble.
Go through that "top secret file" It should answer pretty damn near most questions you have.
Post some photo's, You might have better luck starting another thread when it comes to asking specific troubleshooting questions. In the title, include year and model as well as the model number (it's on the tag on the transom clamp on most motors and on the freeze plug looking thing on the side of the block)
Enjoy,
