Brand new so forgive my ignorance. Looking at a 14' aluminum boat with 18 hp Johnson. Guy wants $700. In central Alabama. Is that reasonable and how do you determine if it's a good boat and also motor? Thanks. I appreciate your help

Re: Help with potential purchase

Do you know the year of the motor? I've had two Evinrude 18's (different badge same motor) a 66 and a 68 and liked them. Parts were easy to get, and were easy to work on. Although the 66 I never had to do much too.

B'ham? Montgomery? I lived in Huntsville for about 8yrs, in NC now, but still do work down there from time to time.

Make him run it, preferably on the lake. If assured that you are serious about the purchase and he has nothing to hide, it's not too much to ask.

Thanks for replying. We are just south of Birmingham. Do you know if Johnson only made the 18hp in the 60's. I've got an email picture of the boat and motor. Does that help? Would you pay$700?

Re: Help with potential purchase

Post the picture. I love the old 18's. Johnson made em from '57 to '65. I have many. In '66 the same engine was a 20. I' m not sure if they ever went back to the 18 although Evinrude kept making em into the 70's.

Most 14' aluminum boats leak I find up here. Hard to know if it's not in the water though. As mentioned, I'd want to see it running also. Check the compression if you can. Make sure it comes with a tank also.

And welcome to the forum...

It's a good time to buy. A 14' with a sound running 18 for $700 sounds pretty reasonable. And a decent trailer as well. Post some photo's, is it a craigslist ad. if so post a link.

Just read your last post, ignore last sentence above

Re: Help with potential purchase

There's a similar package on Huntsville craigslist for 500, just south of Decatur. If this guy isn't willing to prove that it is what it's advertised as, pass it up. Not to prey on people, but the closer it gets to Christmas the more leverage you have to haggle. After the new year when the credit card bills start rolling in might be a better time.

If it checks out haggle anyway, it's fun.

Good luck, Paul

Yeah, you're right. I don't need it so I can certainly walk away. I really appreciate you taking the time to help. I owe the guy the time to look at it so I'll ride down tomorrow. thanks again.

Well, personally, I happen to think highly of the old 18's. I've had several and the '57 and '58 is my years of preference. Since you're getting a 14' aluminum boat in the deal, it is a decent deal.

I love the 18's. Have many of em. Have a '66 J20 on my boat right now which is the same engine... And you can shrink the picture with most photo software. I use irfanview. It's free and great software. www.irfanview.com

Well...we bought it. Had to give $700 but we think it's going to be good. Really appreciate y'alls input. Will certainly have more questions and look forward to moving beyond the ranking of cadet....sincere thanks

Congrats Dave,

Lay lake is calling your name, better yet Smith lake. Pull that lower unit and change the impeller if the previous owner didn't remember when he did it or you forgot to ask him. Better safe than sorry, it's a cheap part and is a lot better than burning up a motor.

Take care

Sounds like a great boat...hoping that you get some pics posted one day, love to see it. I'm hoping to get something like that myself, maybe a little older. Enjoy!

Re: Help with potential purchase

Been working on this bad-boy. Had to release a brittle fuel line. The model number is FD-20 C. Googled that and found a previous iboat thread that indicates it is a 1966 20 hp Canadian model. Do you guys have an opinion as to whether that is better than the 18 hp or worse--or is it about the same thing. Paul, appreciate the advice on the impeller..I will certainly do that. Couldn't get it to crank at the lake so going to have to learn the hard way...it's close, though. Any other advice on being proactive and going through it thoroughly? Thanks again.

Re: Help with potential purchase

There is a section at the top of the Johnson/Evinrude forum, called "top secret file" It covers a lot of territory on how to get your motor working.

Compression is the first thing to check (with in 10% of each other 100psi plus if I remember correctly, someone will offer up the correct number if I'm wrong) , next spark, You want a nice crisp blue spark. If you have a tester that you can adjust the distance between the contacts. It should jump a 1/4" fresh gas is important. 50:1 mix. tcw 3 oil. Drain and replaced lower unit.
If you're in a rush napa can order your impeller, they usually get it the next day. Throw iboats store a bone and buy something from them, It makes this forum possible. Prices are competitive, although I've found cheaper, I buy from here every once and a while outta guilt.

Compression and spark are the first step, like any other motor if you got these two you're left with fuel. And that could be a number of things.

For each thing you run into, the topics have been beaten to death on here especially for such a popular motor. Use the search option and read up on each element you are trying to check or troubleshoot. Try to focus on one thing at a time. Take pictures as you disassemble.

Go through that "top secret file" It should answer pretty damn near most questions you have.

Post some photo's, You might have better luck starting another thread when it comes to asking specific troubleshooting questions. In the title, include year and model as well as the model number (it's on the tag on the transom clamp on most motors and on the freeze plug looking thing on the side of the block)

Enjoy,

The FD 20. Excellent. Same as the 18. As far as I have seen it's just a bigger carb on it. as I mentioned I have an FD20 on my boat now, but it doesn't like starting in cold weather so will be pulling it asap. Get her running... and post pics. we like pics!
