Re: help with valves,i think

2800 you could have bought a professionally rebuilt long block. I am sorry you are going through this. Stop with your friend/mechanic. I am sure he means well but I fear there may be damage done if the valves hit the pistons. You said you couldn't afford the 'good guys' yet you pumped 2800.00 into it. I'd say at this point you cannot afford to NOT use the good guys. You pulled the dipstick, saw no oil, filled it, now its 10 quarts... Wrong dipstick and tube, and/or wrong oil pan. Or possibly just your boat in a 35 degree slanted driveway in which case pull the wheel chocks and let it all fly down into the street.. wait better not. Look, this is not a stereo. This is completely different and like they say you are not a mechanic, not even close. No insult intended, just the facts ma'am. You need on site help. You can try the manual and asking questions here but somewhere along the line you'll translate something wrong and it won't turn out good. Very easy to make a costly mistake. That said, good luck. I'll be reading this with interest I do hope it works for you.

Re: help with valves,i think

I am still learning the ins and outs of boat engines, however, I do build racing engines regularly for my racing team. I would definitely pull that engine back out, and start over by pulling the engine and re-building the engine. It's not very difficult and can be done with a little direction and a few special tools which you can rent at most auto parts stores. There are plenty of extremely bright people on this site that could step you through one step at a time in getting that engine built and installed properly. If you need step by step help on building that engine, I would be happy to step you through each process. Just don't assume at this point and do something that could be catastrophic to a new engine.

thank you very much guys. i,m cool now. the dipstick tube had a hole in it and the stick was going out the side not picking up any oil level on the stick. so i tilted the boat as much as it would go and removed the tube from the pan. cleaned up the bildge and reinstalled the repaired dip stick tube. i wired up the engine, turned on the batterys and tried the lites, gauges, stereo, all the pumps and aerators and everything worked NO SMOKE!!! on to the valves on wens. thanks again.

Re: help with valves,i think

ok just got off emerg.service and had a beer and ready to work on boat.hooked up all hoses.readjusted the rockers, temp. loose enough for the engine can start.when i first got the boat it had a car engine in it, nothing marine. i posted pics.of the engine and Don S. tpld me it was a bomb waiting to explode. God bless you man. when the guy installed the new to me engine he was going to change the boat to engine side of the harnass because the purple wire was jumped out at the plug. he used my old harness with no jump wire. last nite i tried to bump the engine and NOW it sounds like it has compression but it would not turn over like it had no spark.well as i was looking around the back side of the motor i saw a purple wire comming from the console wedged down in the bildge. the thing is their was already 2 purple wires on the coil. one from the alt. and one from the ign. mod. so i wired it up with the other purple wires on the coil AND IT FIRED UUPPP!!! so i shut it down and filled the closed system with water and it started leaking like a sive out of a hole on the block, portside next to #1 sparkplug. i read its a drain. i want to just run a bolt in it without taking off the manifold. does anybody know what size bolt i need. thank very much. tim

If it's a drain, you might have to run to the hardware store and pick up a brass petcock. On my merc one of the drain plugs is just a brass plug. One of the experts will be along here soon to tell you what one to use, however either will work. The petcock is just a little easier to drain in the future. I believe the size is 1/4 inch pipe thread. And remember...SOLID BRASS ONLY. If you have a bolt that fits the hole take it with you to the hardware store to match the size. You will find brass petcocks and plugs in the plumbing department.

post a picture. however if it is on the middle of the block, it is a drain port. you need a 1/4" npt brass plug

If it's a head bolt you don't want to pick it up at the hardware store just yet. While it would be a grade 8 bolt, suggest you pull everything off check, and retorque all the head bolts.

I believe hes talking about the hole where the temp sender went for an auto application. marine engines have them plugged

Re: help with valves,i think

hey guys. got engine started, valve covers off and water starts comming out where their should be oil over the rockers. did something wrong. rebuilt heads, new gaskets, manifolds, risers, block off gaskets all new. i rechecked the plumbing from raw water pickup to risers and everything looks ok. only thing found on forum is water in oil not water being pumped. what do ya think? thanks.

Pressurize the cooling side and see if you can hear where it comes out. Sounds like a crack somewhere.
