Re: Help!

We put it in today when we get much over idle barely going it feels like it is slipping out of gear. Won't push boat to raise bow at all.
Sounds like it revs up. Right? If it does then there a few causes:

1) Spun hub. Marking the hub as posted a few back, and trying another prop can confirm this

2) Major failure in the lower unit. Doesn't really sound like that

3) Ventilation. Which I don't see mentioned here.

Ventilation is when the prop starts grabbing air off the hull/surface. Will spin up wildly, and won't go anywhere in extreme examples. This can be caused by motor height, irregularities in the bottom, bad prop design for that hull, and some other issues. Maybe the mechanic already looked at the motor height? Also, a water logged boat will still accelerate, it may not plane, but it will at least try. If it is revving up high, then waterlogged or not, there are other issues. If it just won't exceed a certain RPM and pushes a big bow wave, and makes a big wake, and just won't get out of it's own way, but is not revving up wildly, then this could be waterlogged plus too much pitch, or even low power.

Re: Help!

The mechanic is going to bring me a different prop in the morning to try.

Is this mechanic working for free as a favor? Initially, why didn't you take the boat to him, describe the symptoms, have him call you with a quote, and than proceed with the repairs? Why is the best mechanic around for 30 years making guesses?

y i would say check prop for slipping first ??? i dont think the 2 inch pitch would make that bigggg of a difference but im no pro just my opinion !!!

Re: Help!

I might as well add to this also. I sort of agree with QC. Was this outboard used on the boat before? If it revs good, and the prop is good, I'd make sure the prop is lower than the hull. I know it sounds like a stupid thing, that's the type I make all the time, but if the prop can't pull the water, it can't push the boat. I learned that a long time ago when a Marina I bought a motor from insisted it was right. After I tried it and had no power, like you say, they told me I needed to lower the transom. I finally got a long shaft outboard, and it worked fine then. The weight of the boat would slow it down some, run it over a set of scales.

Re: Help!

Great news I marked the prop and it is a spun hub. Also yes the mechanic has been helping us out for free. I just tell him what's going on and he will give me suggestions to do. They have all been right before. If there comes a time when I can't fix it then he will do it. Until then it has been sufficient that I went to school and was friends with his daughter and he knew my dad.

Re: Help!

Yes the motor was on a pontoon last year. The guy I bought it from decided that 90hp wasn't enough for him so he bought a brand new 150hp. This motor was used all last boating season and was changed after being winterized.

Re: Help!

Let us know how it goes with a new prop. Quick and simple fix is great.

I would still look at weighing the boat and figuring out how much water damage you actually have.

Re: Help!

Good news on several fronts. Put new prop on it and it runs like a champ. Also drilled a few test holes and I think the stringers and transom are good. I think the floor is just bad from sitting in the rain the last 2 years. I guess we will see this winter. It shot right out of the hole and planed out very quick so I don't think it is as waterlogged as I first suspected.
