Re: Here I go, feet first {w/pictures}

Haven't gave up yet..lol...been fillin voids and what-not since the "painted deck" fiasco.

I read where someone else had a similar situation of trap areas, where water can't get to the bilge due to manufacturer's design...here's how I hopefully am handling mine...

You can see from this 'below' shot that the chine{terminology?} stops dead in its tracks{one on port and starboard}...

here's the deckside shot.. pocket is right where deck meets side

I used this stuff called 'Sealant Foam' from Evercoat, said to be a waterproof urethane semi-rigid closed-cell sealing foam...guess I'll find out{lol} I plan to glass over it {epoxy/1708}while doing the deck, as soon as my latest order from US comp gets here....I never seem to order enough of anything...

No that foam won't work. You're going to have to scrape it out and sand it off.......

Just kidding :)

How hard was that foam to work with? I won't even thing of using "great stuff" foam, but I remember using it on other projects and hated trying to shape it/sand it.

EZ... dude.. ya damn near gave me a stroke..lol

Thrillhouse, sorry I didn't remember that was your thread...least we're not alone.
I like the 'bonding' attributes of it, seems to have stuck real well to my hull..hope it stays that way. I think after it's glassed in properly, it should be good to go.

Hey RedFury, much easier that that other stuff. You can see the handsaw in one of the photo's. I used that one and a flush cutting saw{really flexable and thin} it also held up to the sander with some 80 grit used lightly to feather the edges. Shaping went smoothly after I quit trying to do it quickly, slow draws of the saw seemed best{still a little messy tho}. Oh yeah, make sure you let it dry completely before shaping..can says 12 hr's, but I found some wet stuff in the middle when I first tried shaping...depends on how thick I'm sure...mine was about 4-5 inches{deepest area of mine} it was fine after about 18 hrs.

Only thing I found with this is you can't move too fast with your spraying, it will leave gaps if you do, the foam spray needs to be held in the general place and lifted to height until almost full{it expands like the others} working from one end to the other...not thin layers back and forth..at least thats what worked for me.

Edit: oh yeah, I used two cans per side, roughly 4ft long and tapers from 1inch to about 7inches wide...hope this helps and good luck! :)

I have a couple of spots like that in my boat too. I only wished I would have done what you did before the deck went in a week + ago. :(

Will that sealant foam be effected by polyester resin?

I plan to put glass over it. Perhaps painting it over with spray paint a day before laying glass on it will prevent its turning to goo as the resin cures?

Maybe I'll put a thin layer of PL adhesive on top. :cool:

Re: Here I go, feet first {w/pictures}

Hi Darren, I'm using epoxy and I pre-tested...3 days now with no problems. Not sure about poly, and my test was without glass, just some epox & hardner on a scrap piece of foam.

Are you thinking about pulling your deck back up? I wouldn't if already down securely...pretty small area to be overly concerned with if you did the deck & stringers correctly. It was that way for how many years before we came along, ya know. Any moisture would probably drain when the trailers tilted up during storage, or backing down a steep ramp.

My US Comp order came today, but they're calling for showers on an off all thru the weekend{outside project here}...Probably be first of the week before I can FINALLY get the deck sealed up.

I caught up on your blog Darren, hope things turn around for you soon, keep that chin up!

Your welcome Thrillhouse, should do the trick it seems. LOL I hear ya on the waiting part, I placed my order last thurs, received it today{one day more than usual and I was a basket case...lol}

Darren - don't paint it, I had to sand all of my paint off the deck, as was advised from those here more experienced... on the grounds the glass won't adhere properly. PB or PL would be ok tho I'm no expert...try a test sample with the poly as I did with the epox.

Re: Here I go, feet first {w/pictures}

Well, finally coming together, got the deck glassed in, and a coat of epoxy primer & 2-part epoxy paint put down...
p2053652.jpg

and after a bit of trouble last evening and this morning, got the cap back in place, starting to look like a boat again...
p2063654.jpg

Looks like the sag in the consoles {due to the previously rotten deck} is gone as well. may have to adjust the starboard side dash panel a tad to make it look better, but thats a simple 'ream the mounting holes' thingy...
p2063657.jpg

was beginning to wonder if this day would ever come, still lots to do, but thats gravy compared to whats taken place up to now...couldn't have done it this far without all of your help...Thanks again for being here...hope the rest goes well for me and to whatever your into currently as well...have a safe holiday weekend!

HopeSheFloats nice work:D That deck looks great and you are thru the woods as they say at this point so you should feel good about that.

Is she getting splashed this year? Good luck with the old girl:)

WOOOOOOW dang that looks good. Congrats. Right now I'm about to leave my house to go work on mine!. Did you do a full wrap on your deck or just glass the underside and then one layer on the top?

Re: Here I go, feet first {w/pictures}

Thanks guy's!!!

Huron Angler, I sure hope to splash her this year, time & $$$ are the deciding factors, I haven't even began the motor or decided what style seating I desire{leaning towards 2 solo seats instead of back to backs...usually fishing more than pleasure crusing} ...either way she'll be ready at 'Ice-out' in march.

Thrillhouse, I epoxy coated the bottom sides and threw some leftover exterior paint on top of that for good measure{5 pieces total}...
deckbottomsealing.jpg

then a layer of 1708{w/epoxy} on the top...looking back I should of glassed it all, but the tight-wad in me tossed the idea...oh well should last a good while as is.

Re: Here I go, feet first {w/pictures}

Not much to update as I've been getting my ducks in a row around the house before ol' man winter comes a knockin.

Did manage some time to get the windshield, steering assmy and control cables back in.
I also decided to do away with the jump seats, too small for my behind and most adults as far as that goes. Figure it's mine might as well do what I want, and this allows better access to the motor if 'ever' need be ;) and allows easier placing and removing of the gas tanks. Still have to figure out how I want to support the splashwell tho, either a couple of 'legs' below in the front of it. or maybe something along the lines of a reverse/upside down knee brace from the front, back to transom{could tie them into the stringers thru the bilge access.

Got the motor inside the shop yesterday, lots of fun by myself...approx 300#'s and a 4" threshold, but luck was on mine and the stands side lol. Going to make the motor a winter project, I'm in no rush and my wallet wants a breather.

Hope your all gettin along well with life and yer what-nots.......Cheers!

Nice job, we finally got our foam and it was awful to work with. I commend you for your patience with that stuff. We ended up getting some 2 part poly foam that you can use poly resin on. The two 1qt cans we got will expand to fill our whole boat haha.
