Re: Here I go, feet first {w/pictures}

Thanks Mike, not sure on the true classification good question! Anyone dare an answer?
I grew up in Alpena, Royal Oak & Clawson in that order until I joined the Army back in '76. I plan to take full advantage of all the lakes around here I can, first luv is St. Clair, followed by Orion, Orchard, Stoney Creek and Pontiac and...and...and...:):):)
How bout you?...where do you like splashing?

Hey Kenny, I was on vaca, then I wanted to read thru the whole post here, so took me awhile to reply.

Anyway, I mostly dropped the boat in Cass Lake last year since it's close to my house, but lately I've grown partial to Pontiac Lake. Not so crowded or choppy as Cass. And even though it's smaller,it has a lot of nooks & crannies to explore that make it almost seem bigger.

I'd like to take her out on St. Clair, but I'd keep a close eye on the wave action forecast before I took my little 16' runabout out there. That extra foot on your boat (not to mention extra hp) will probably make a lot of difference.

Lookin' good on the resto! This is a fun thread to read, and being a former fellow resident of the Mad Heights (and owner of an old boat I will probably be restoring one day), I'll definitely be following along...good luck!

p.s. I have to agree with ezmobee on the new frame choice for the radio :p

Re: Here I go, feet first {w/pictures}

Hi Mike, no worries on the time thingy, hope ya had a great time. You know for as long as I've been around I've never been to Cass Lake{:eek:}. And I agree on Pontiac being much more 'relaxed'{from what I hear} lol.

Before this project, my last tub was a 16'er with a 40 merc and as you said, picking out the days was/is the secret to St.Clair, had my faith restored in JC a few times out there {lol}...ah live & learn right? :)

Thanks for keeping up with my resto, hope it continues to be a fun journey.

Re: Here I go, feet first {w/pictures}

With this weather we had this past weekend{rain, humidity, heat} I decided to play inside the shop.

Started off with the motor cover,
coverkcz.jpg

did some sanding and priming then no sooner than I had layed the first coat of paint alongs comes mr fly and plops right down on it and gets stuck{lol my painting skills stink so bad they draw flies}.
paintfly.jpg

No finished photo's of it yet, as I've only done that first coat so far. But I've been toying with an idea to have my own vinyl decals made up for it, this is just a sample done in my photoshop app...kinda like the idea of having something unique...The final color will be cover-white, decal-black with the red triangle.
decal.jpg

notice his arm{the johnson fans will recognize his tat work lol}. Also found time to do the window tinting, I went with the 35% {65% of light passes thru} as I do occasionally fish/cruise after dark.
tint.jpg

And finally...
stepped outside long enough to throw some white paint in the bilge and under the splashwell area, again just to help these poor old eyes.
brighten.jpg

Still haven't put the cap on as you can see, no hurry really as I keep coming up with things to do that would be easier now than later. I plan on using some 'great stuff' foam to surround and support some paper tubing, the kind like x-mas paper is on, going to place them under the gunwales to run my wiring thru and for some more added flotation...that's it for now, I have the motor cover wet-sanded and will proceed with more coats this evening after dinner.....
Here's to the best in all our projects...cheers.....Kenny

Re: Here I go, feet first {w/pictures}

LOL CBK, back in my younger days, fresh out of the service, I worked for a company out of Jackson Mississippi selling magazine subscriptions{ya one of 'those' people..had a ball traveling all over the southern half of the USA though} Anyways, was working around the St.Cloud Fla. area, and walked up and rang a doorbell and just as the homeowner opened the door a friggin chameleon or newt or whatever it was{ looked like godzilla's offspring to me at the moment..lol} jumped or fell or plain out an out tried to attack me and landed right on my shoulder....well I don't know who got the bigger kick out of watching me make a durn fool of myself, the 'Lizard' or the lady standing at the door, all I remember is that at that moment in time, I had more moves than Soul Train, Michael Jacko and the Village People combined....never will forget that day.

You know it's your guy's sense of humor that brings these back to mind....luv this place!!!

LOL Lizzards , Love buggs and any number of other SW Floriduh crawling pests :D. I dont know though ahalf dozen good old Floriduh Palmetto buggs painted to the transom might save on gas a little as long as they all kicked at the same time :D.

Heh, when I painted my topper, there wasn't a bug in sight. When I came back to check on it an hour later, I swear every bug sitting on a blade of grass flew up to check out that nice white paint job :rolleyes:

Thank god for wet sanding!

I'm really thinking I'm going to HAVE TO find a garage to paint the boat in when I get to that stage. I'm not going to even attempt to do it outside in the raw like I did that topper.

I know Rick will recognize this contraption on my back wall...turn it on, it sucks every flying thing out except flies evidently[lol]...I use it to exhuast fumes and smoke out of the shop
p1113546.jpg

Kinda hard to see it thru the mess the mrs hasn't gotten around to dealing with, look at all this junk left over from her 'sale of the century' yard sale...I don't even have room to fart{sorry lol}...
p1113552.jpg

look close{on the bench} at the second photo and you can see how I removed the fly...used clippers as tweezers, takes a gentle touch I tell ya lol.......improvise - true hillbilly blood I guess!

You're doing it wrong. Yard sale stuff DOES NOT come back inside in any way shape or form after the sale. It goes immediately to Goodwill/dumpster.

Re: Here I go, feet first {w/pictures}

Aaaaaaaaaaaah yes the ever popular furnace squirel cage bad air extraction system :D. I have put in a few of those for buddies over the years :D.

EZ is 100% correct if it doesnt sell at the yard sale you call goodwill and it goes to them right then and there .

Then again that pile fully breaks rule number 1 ( The garage is mine you can have the rest of the house ) My SWMBO was told this from day one and she even got me the Tshirt that says it :D.

Re: Here I go, feet first {w/pictures}

I'm with ya guy's...these women folk think this stuff is antiques & collectibles, I tell them that it's so much more than that, that it should be considered heirlooms and that they should 'pass them' down now so the younger generations can 'enjoy' them...lol

In actuallity, the mrs sez she's need to seperate them accordingly to the groups she donates to ie:purple Heart, Vietnam Vets of America, and the local churches...guess she's particular about who gets my old beer can & cap collection's or her garfield & ziggy dishes{lol}

Lol Rick, I screwed that up{her space vs mine} before I put the wood stove in the garage, I talked her out of 'her' spare bedroom to use as my 'music room'. I didn't want to leave my guitars and recording equipment out in the cold.....man I need to learn to look & think ahead...where's that smiley banging his head icon?

Re: Here I go, feet first {w/pictures}

LOL I gave mine a small corner of the shop with her own work bench and tools if it doesnt fit in her corner she has a week to complete the project or it has to go :D. The only things I have in the house are my magazine collection and my clothes and I hear about the magazines regularly ROFLMAO " Why do you need to keep all of those after you have read them ".
