Re: High Gas Prices

I will save money elsewhere, but no decrease in boating. Even at $4 a gallon its still cheaper than seeing a shrink weekly, and much cheaper than a divorce.

Besides, I am making up for lost time from because of putting boating on hold for my education and starting a family. I can't let gas hold that back!

Depending on the area of country you are in, your regular grade gas may already have 10% ethanol. We've been using it in Minnesota since 1997. Don't confuse E10 (ethanol blended fuel or gasahol) with E-85. They are almost directly opposite of each other so E-85 must not be used in your outboard or inboard as it is 15% regular gas and 85% ethanol. Fortunately my car runs on corn squeezin's and it's currently at $2.50/gal.

Maybe the gas crunch will curb this trend of everyone having a giant boats with even bigger motors. You see bass shows on television where those guys "have" to speed at WOT from lake-end to lake-end to get that fish. I see it on my lake all of the time. Heck, a friend insists on going 35 miles to the other end of the lake to catch walleye. What a waste.

I think that there are small things that we can each do, such as reducing the size of our boats and motors (better for the lakes/environment anyway) as well as modifying our habits, such as not going all over the lake to find a bite, and not cruising at warp speed to get there. Half of the fun for me is the trip to another spot, not getting there in two seconds and then sitting, before racing somewhere else and sitting.

I catch plenty of fish and don't go too far from my dock...and I still get to enjoy being on the water.

Nah. Understand, I don't have a boat that's all motor, that'd be useless. But I can see the day when I'll own a 60 footer liveaboard, cruising around in semi-retirement.

Relying on the current population to reduce their use of fossil fuels so that prices will go back down and our dependence on foreign energy will drop too is like expecting a meth addict to just "taper back" his use a bit. Not gonna happen.

The main thing we're complaining about here is prices... I truly do wish that someone would develop a sterling engine inboard (external combustion) for boats... but personally I'm gonna keep boating a lot even if prices increase to $5 a gallon. I won't like it, though.

I plan on spending more time on the boat, just less time with water sports and WOT cruising. The wife and I love nothing more than to anchor off a small island and just enjoy being on the water. There's just something relaxing to being on the water.;)

Re: High Gas Prices

Well I do plan to change the way we were going to boat this year. We had three extended boat trips planned. Now it will be just one trip a year spread over a three year period. That included all food and Motels for several nights.
Also there won't be all the riding 3/4 or WOT for hours on end. There will be a whole lot more Anchoring, a lot more drifting and a whole lot more fishing.

Last year I put 85 hours on the Hour Meter, probably 200 on the boat. I will strive to cut that to 60-65 hours this year on the meter if fuel goes to $4 a Gallon.

Doesnt matter what the price is, I dont change lifestyle whatsoever.

The difference gas prices make over a year of boating is negligible. Same with driving or any other gas powered thing I own.

Now if beer and steak prices went up astronomically...

Oil closes at record high of 110.58

Also, Prince Alwaleed bin Talal of Saudi Arabia places order for a Custom $300 million Airbus double-decker A380, the largest commercial airplane model in the world. He's currently travels in a customized Boeing 747-400 with two throne rooms.

Guess he's getting tired of it

Well the good news is when this country falls into a deep depression at least the gas company folks will have enough profit saved to last them 200 years. Their great grand kids need to pay for college you know. Chief CEO of exon said last week when asked about people not being able to afford gasoline and also keep warm in the winter said "life is tuff"

I just got a call tonight to remove around 20 chords of bodark from a fencerow so a new fence can be put in. That wood will give me more than 2000 hours range for the steamboat. I will keep y'all posted as to the expenses in gas and oil for the saws, diesel for the truck and tractor, the time to cut into usable lengths and what I get paid for the job.

There is no such thing as a free lunch. As a friend says "External Combustion is an Eternal Chore", but every once in a while you get paid to do that chore anyway. Not bad for a retiree. It should take 10 days at my pace and that places it finishing just at the beginning of good fishing weather!

On Monday me and my father went to the local lake. (Lake Bastrop Texas) The lake is only 800 acres or so. Anyway we launched the boat by pushing it off the trailor, then I trolled over to the dock to pick him up. We trolled for about 3 hours catching 6 fish before we had to start the outboard. $$$ savings!

My wife is in the business. A day on the water is not called a SICK DAY. It is called a MENTAL HEALTH DAY. You can self medicate to your heart's content.

Have to go a long with the Captain. Will start my fishing at the launch with the trolling motor. Fish my way out and fish my way back. Probably only start the larger motor up to get the cobwebs out of the carbs.
Marinas in Oregon are definately hurting, normally repairs at this time of the year are 2 to 3 weeks out, now its "bring your motor in, and we'll get started".

We are vacationing in Ft Myers Beach, FL next week and plan on renting a boat for the day to check out Hurricane Bay, Sanabel and Captiva islands. I called the marina the other day to reserve a boat, and asked what the price of fuel is on the water right now. $4.85. WOW!

Yea I agree. I was looking at the bottom of this page at similar threads. The gas cost conversation began in 2004 and to read them now they are amusing. We are still boating and buying bigger boats too!
