Hi everyone, new to iboat and just wanted to introduce myself. The reason I am posting though is to ask about an e-mail I just received, I am currently looking to purchase a boat and found one that appears to be what I am looking for on Craig's List out of Charlotte N.C. E-mailed the seller asking for more pictures or a meeting to inspect the boat (1989 Spectrum 1900 V-hull) and this was the reply I received.

(The price is $2800. See more pictures attached .Look, I 'm now in Birmingham UK, and will be moving here permanently soon, but I am using Express Transports services so I can sell the boat from this far away. They have it in a storage place in Chicago since I left . They will take care of the shipping , paperwork, and everything else. Also, there's a return policy included. So if you want to buy it, please let me know and I will explain you how Express Transports works and how we can proceed. Please excuse me for my grammar use, I had a stroke six months ago and I?m recovering.)

No pictures even though he says they are attached and now says the boat is in Chicago? Sounds like a scam, what do all of you think?

Thanks for any replies

Re: Hmmm Suspicious

This is a complete scam. I've seen this before almost word for word. See if you recognize any similarities to this one I received below last winter...from a Seattle craigslist enquiry....hmmm, similar....lets see.

"See more pictures attached .Look, I 'm now in Birmingham UK, and will be moving here permanently soon, but I am using MoneyBookers services so I can sell the boat from this far away. They have it in a storage place in Medford OR since I left . They will take care of the shipping , paperwork, and everything else. Also, there's a return policy included. So if you want to buy it, please let me know and I will explain you how MoneyBookers works and how we can proceed. now....play this clown and see what he does, but do not pay or send him anything or you will be out that money, absolutely.

PS: DO NOT send your real phone number, name or address. All of this info can start ID theft. In fact, use a hotmail account for any responses to ads on craigslist or kijiji.

Re: Hmmm Suspicious

Thanks guys, about what I thought, wonder if my seller is related to yours?
Was not thinking about it to hard, with a used boat I want to be able to get my hands and eyes on it for a good inspection. Might play with him some just to waste his time but probably not worth much of my time.:D

I agree, did you see that Mantra jet boat the other day? It was listed for $4500 firm in the Oshawa section and $1900 in the Toronto section? I wrote them just for snickers and the lady said she was going through a divorce and the boat was in Edmonton all packed up and ready to go.

The thing is, I tried to post about the boat on kijiji and I got a warning from them about following the rules if you can imagine that! I wrote back after seeing the boat still listed and asked them who was the bigger problem and why they still had the boat listed?? Never did see a reply but the ad has now been removed.
The thing I noticed most about these scams is they "never" list a phone number, you always have to use e-mail which everyone knows getting an e-mail address for Yahoo or who ever you use is real simple. Be careful folks, they obviously suck some people in or else they would have quit this scam a long time ago!!........Irv964

Re: Hmmm Suspicious

it is pretty easy to spot scams on craigslist. usually its a 20 or 30 thousand dollar boat for selling for about 10k. If the listing tells you to use an email address for contact instead of going through craigslist's system thats a pretty good sign.also if your suspicious. Cut and paste the title of the ad into google. if it comes back with the same craigslist listing from seattle,New York,Philadelphia,Delaware ect. you know its a scam. Many times these scammers bulk list their ads in every region they can,so you will get a list from google from many regions

I saw the same exact boat listed in Nashville today. Its a scam. They get you to send money then you are SOL. Flag it. If the person is legit, they can post it again.

I have been looking for a TDI VW. This too seems to be a popular place to set up such a scam.

a little of the subject, they are now doing the same thing on rental houses here. find listings in the MLS, and putting them on craigslist as a rental.

Re: Hmmm Suspicious

Which is a shame, because I found a hell of a lake house to rent here from some super nice people through Craigslist. I did be sure and communicate, communicate, and communicate with them before sending them money. They were local, went and took additional pictures for me, and I talked with them by email and phone. However, I was still scared it was a scam when pulling up with the family.

A soldier from the 101st returned home from Iraq and tried to buy an accord, here and got scammed. The local dealer, D Waltrip Honda, Franklin, ended up giving the kid an accord.

Its becoming really prevalent on Craigslist. Hopefully they do not sink what otherwise is a good thing.

The bottom line, if it sounds too good to be true it is.

This is a scam! I almost fell for one about a month ago until my father-in-law opened my eyes.

This is VERY common now on Craigslist!

Re: Hmmm Suspicious

My understanding is that Craig's List is designed for local purchases, where you look at the product, meet the seller and complete the transaction in person. E-bay and other on-line services are designed for long-distance purchases and have SOME safeguards built in to protect both parties. These safeguards are not available at Craig's list and they warn you of this on the site. It is a shame that there are so many dihonest people out there. Remember, if a deal sounds "too good to be true", it probably is....

Re: Hmmm Suspicious

i'm helping my buddy look for a boat, found one on craigslist, he emailed and go this response. a little different, but still a scam:

"Hello,
I have received your email regarding the 2005 MALIBU WAKESETTER XTI .
The boat is in perfect condition, with no scratches on it,no damage, clear title.
The price for the boat is $5000 with shipping included.
The boat was my husband`s as he loved it very much, but he did not enjoy it as he died in a IRAQ 3 month ago. It brings very bad memories to me, I want to get rid of it.
The buyer will receive the boat with all papers and receipts that he needs to register it to his name.
Shipping will be done whit DAS and it will take no more then 2-3 days. I have a friend there who will manage me a low price shipping and I assumed that it is my duty to pay for shipping it.It will be delivered directly to your address.
Anyway, I have to let you know that I want a fast deal so if you are really interested in buying it,please reply with the following information's:
-Your full name;
-Your shipping address.
The transaction will close only through ebay so we both will be protected.
I want ebay because as they are the biggest company on the internet I think that we can close this deal fast and safe for both of us. Also I am not very familiar with the internet transactions and ebay is the only one I know.
I will look for your email,so that we can move forward with this deal!
Let me know.
Thanks!"

like you all had said, it was on ebay for like 20k or something like that

beware of the gypsie's

Re: Hmmm Suspicious

I sold my previous Novurania on Craigslist. I got 47 legit inquiries about the boat and 7 people came to take a look. (the second person to visit ended up buying it.)

So Craigslist is a great FREE resource to buy or sell things.

However, I also got 7 scammer emails. They wanted to buy the boat sight-unseen. They were sending me cashiers checks for 2-3 times the purchase price and I was to send them the difference via wire transfer. They would arrange for a company to pick up the boat.
unbeknownst to them, my partner works for a little bank named Citibank. We told them we had a deal and to send the checks. We received 6 different cashiers checks and they all were determined to be stolen. <INSERT SUPRISED LOOK HERE> At least I reduced their scammer possibilities by 6. And I had Tons of fun in the process.

Once you know you've got one, reel it in slowly, and enjoy the show.

Re: Hmmm Suspicious

100% Scam. Probably a guy based out of Africa trying to get you to purchase the boat over the web so that he may rip you off and run. Do not proceed further.
