I don't mind our HOA that much. It's cheap enough and the neighborhood is nice. I really don't want my neighbors having abandoned vehicles or chickens in the yard. Boats are not an issue, but I think the dead deer hanging from the basketball hoop would be. I'm OK with that.

We still have our property out in the country, no one tells us what to do on it my property=my business. Not my neighbors or anyone else. As long as my property isn't infringed on or damaged what you do with your property is your business.

As for now we are stuck in an apartment until we have the money to build, and if I have to hand hammer every nail it will be 100% paid for when I am done. That is my objective I am 28 now my truck is almost paid for my wife's car is almost paid for and every nickle extra money is going in savings so that I can build my house and have it paid for cash. At 40 I want everything I own paid for entirely debt free. Our property is paid for no liens allready.

Ive known people to move out of subdivisions because the rules are too restrictive and some didnt read them all before buying. One friend told of the retired, single president, who would walk the streets almost daily looking for violations!sometimes carrying binoculars to peer into backyards or behind fences.I told him I thought that was Invation of privacy, but I guess it was written in the rules.A bunch of his neighbors got together to challenge some of the "violations"My friend moved out shortly after for a bigger house in the country.Im concerned that soon our rural subd.is going to be annexed into an snobby "town" that has lots of restrictions. They sent us a nice little letter to let us know.If I get a compaint for a bonfire or cutting down a dead tree,or skinning a deer in my yard,Im gonna tell them If they want to buy my property, then they can control what goes on on it!

I would never live in a neighborhood with HOA'S. I lived in an Incorporated Village on Long Island...never again will I deal with that crap. I love going out the back door and letting the .40 fly.

You may think you own your property but in reality your just leasing from your local government. Fail to pay taxes on time or break an ordinance...they have the power to control what you do on your land just like an HOA sometimes worse. If the hoa condemns my property I can fight them in court. If the county condemns a property they would bring the sheriff and physically remove the owner. In my rural county you can be fined for barking dogs, fires, overgrown grass, old cars, signs. They can condemn your well, force you to replace your septic system, send the trash officer, the environmental officer, the animal control officer, the health inspector. And in the city limits it gets worse....they can even tell you what color to paint your house. If you ever had to go to your county officials with a complaint you see how small you are. I have had success with my hoa and they have protected my property. If you don't like your hoa move out and find one that fits YOUR lifestyle. I own two houses one is in an hoa and the other is in (belongs) to the county....I have conflicts with both but more so in the county. In my hoa I can drink a beer in front of my house without getting arrested!!

No thanks, won't live within the restrictions of an HOA ever, but thats my choice, to each his own.

LOL, I think you are actually how people justify HOA's. Seriously though, If I lived in the boonies I could care less about what's in your yard but I live in the 1/2 to 3/4 acre lot version of suburbia and I must admit I'd have a problem if my neighbor had 2 boats and 5 outboard motors out in plain site from the street. In the back yard I don't care.

Having said that I would rather you have all that stuff in your yard than to pay for a HOA. besides most HOA's are not boat friendly.

I have all of that stuff, precisely because my neighbors (all 3 of them) don't care. The only thing they want to know, is when I will take them fishing.

Re: HOA's, you got to love them...

UPDATE:
On Thursday I sent a hot email to the company that manages the HOA and the manager (she had failed to return my calls to and I mention it in the email) call me back just a few minutes after I send it and assured me that she would be calling me Friday with either the permit approved or the reason why it was so delayed. She did call me Friday and told me my permit has been approved, but no apologies or anything like that... Anyway, I start this weekend...
Thanks everyone!

next time you get a budget statement look at how much that management company is getting paid to do nothing, I bet it's 40k a year, ours is.
you could try to complain at a meeting that she's not doing her job and get her replaced, but that's probably impossible.

Alot said there. Same here. I have less problems, and more fun in the HOA home than any other one. Mine anyway.

We don't care about your boat either, almost everyone has one or two.
We shut down some streets for a fish fry or a beer bust if we wish.
We drive golf carts on the paved roads to the beach or the pool.
We walk down the middle of the road with an adult beverage.
The kids can skateboard in the streets.
We can leave our doors unlocked.
We have pink and purple houses.
We have campers. We have people living in them.
We don't cut grass anymore, just water and weed the garden.

I don't have the privlidge of living in the country anymore, but I do live on an island, and I do know how to have fun. Works for me. We just don't care.

The reasons quoted above are the same reasons(except I have to cut grass) I prefer an HOA over county rules.
I was very careful when I chose to live in an HOA. I asked plenty of questions, reviewed the covenants but most importantly OBSERVED the neighborhood and talked with the home owners. In other words I got a good feel of the place before I decided to buy.

Did I read that correct in that someone bought his 300K home for $3500? And all this because he didn't pay an $800 bill. Something is really wrong with your system down there in the US of A.

Re: HOA's, you got to love them...

That's a local story to me, and there is a lot more to it than what is in that short article.........some things would get your blood more boiling (who got the house for 3500 and then resold it for 135K and what was their connection to the HOA..) and some that would have you scratching your head at the ignorance (or illness...) of the woman. Nobody snuck around behind her back and stole the house and there were dozens of certified letters signed for by her over a one year period that were ignored. But then again nobody from the mgt company gave her a call, knocked on the door, or extended themselves in the least to even see what was going on...

It does have a happy ending; they did get the house back.

Some are trying to change the law so that HOA's cannot foreclose, but the developers do not want that to change since they normally control the HOA until after the development is built out. Since the business interests "own" the legislature in TX, things will not change (IMHO).

This PO'd me too. But the media always finds these kind of stories. I would not live in an hoa like that.....but why is that any different than the government seizing your property for delinquent taxes?
In my county if your taxes are not paid by the due date your name is published in the local newspaper. If they are not paid after 180 days after the public announcement they come to your property and erect a sign that states it is for sale to the highest bidder. After someone bids on your property (they can do it on-line) the sheriff will come and evict you off of your property.
My HOA does work with people that are in financial trouble by extensions and/or partial payments and they do show some compassion....I can't say the same for the tax collector!
In NC they passed legislation to prevent HOA's from seizing property.

Re: HOA's, you got to love them...

I lost any faith I ever had in a HOA when the new home we were having built had one set up by the builder to increase the sales appeal. The builder pulled out leaving the neighborhood unfinished and several homes unsold. Then HUD came in selling the homes much cheaper and the HOA rules then were abandoned. I am glad I canceled the deal or I would have been stuck in a place where there were no rules at all. Who wants to live surrounded by HUD buyers anyway..not me. I have even heard of people losing their homes because of the HOAs making up new rules and FEES any time they wanted to.screw it

We live in a HOA and find it very much to our liking. They take care of the mowing and landscaping, the trash, cable tv, flood insurance, roads, exterior maintainance of the buildings, and probably things I've forgotten! It is a dog friendly boating community, but no trailers are allowed to be stored outside. Not a problem. We go to a storage lot.

We prefer to let the HOA deal with all those issues, so we can concentrate on our business.
