Re: Hockey question

There are several other points that can have an icing "waived off," in the NHL game that is. If the team shooting the puck down the ice was attempting a pass (that could have been played by their teammate) or if the defending goaltender moves from his crease to attempt to play the puck the linesman can call for play to continue. This is by and large a judgment call and not frequently called anymore.

As for the chaos factor of hockey. It does often look chaotic, especially on television, but that is primarily due to the speed of the game. The game is played in a very reactive way, especially on the defensive side, which often makes it seem like the players are unsure of where to be. The better players, Crosby, Ovechkin, Lidstrom, Pronger, etc. tend to be proactive making their opponents move into undesirable and sometimes uncomfortable positions.

Watch some footage of the Russian Five from the Detroit Red Wings or the 1970's Montreal Canadiens and you can start to see just some of the plays that are actually in place with many of today's teams.

Where it can be real fun is to watch the Sedins when they are "on". They almost have a sixth sense of where their brother is and it is fun to watch them.

Of course, they are not always "on". Hence Sweden's early exit and no medal.

Re: Hockey question

I knew next to nothing about hockey when I came to Canada over 20 years ago. Could not understand it at all. Learned by watching games with someone that understood it and by my son's playing in local leagues. Love the game now. Did not understand football either till one son played for the high school team (kicker as he is a soccer player at heart) and now I enjoy watching it and understand almost all of it (I think)
The down side to my hockey education is that I am a Toronto Maple Leaf supporter. I am hoping someone can teach them how to play in the near future.:D:D

The Sedins are indeed another great example of two players knowing each others tendencies.

As for the Leafs, I miss the days of the home and homes. Fans making there way up and down the 401 to see hard hitting NORRIS Division hockey. Not this garbage schedule we have now.
