Hole Shot Video - My Larson XL5

I had my boat out for the first time this year yesterday. Aside from a bit of a reverse issue, which I have been battling for a couple of years since I got the motor running, it ran great. I still need to prop it correctly, but right now the tach is not working (most likely a bad rectifier). The motor also needs a bit of a tune-up.

We had a great time on the water. We were out for probably 2 hours, of which about 1/2 hour was spent just sitting in the lake with the engine off. We did a number of high speed runs, and a fair bit of just putting around.

Mrs. bh357 was the lovely camerawoman for the video. She was also happy that she got to go for a boat ride, as we've had the boat for a few years now, and it has been in the water once each of the past 2 years.

Hole Shot
Attn: dialup users. The file is 2.5MB in size.

The boat is a 1973 Larson XL5 (identical in design to the Larson designed Glasspar Catalina G3). The motor is a 1963 Merc 1000. The prop is a 17 pitch.

Subjectively, how would you rate the acceleration? This was with 2 people aboard (approximately 400lbs of people, gear, gas).

Not bad. It might be a little slower than my boat, but as far as I can tell, not bad. Is your prop vented? When I vented mine, it made a world of difference. I would say cut my planing time in half. :D My boat almost jumps out of the water now.

Re: Hole Shot Video - My Larson XL5

Hole seemed fast enough....saying that the prop doesn't have too much pitch. Seen faster, and lots much slower.

Engine rpm's (judged by the engine noise) seem to be ok hence the prop doesn't have too much pitch. Wake is nice and flat, closing quite a ways behind the boat.

Like the guys say. Looks like it just needs some time on the lake so that the owners can enjoy.

Mark

Re: Hole Shot Video - My Larson XL5

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Rudy, the prop is not vented. It is a 17 pitch, and I don't remember the diameter exactly. There is about a 1/2" by 1" chunk out of one blade, but I don't notice any vibration.

Texasmark, do you have any idea about how many rpm I'm turning there? The tach is currently not functioning, which I believe to be due to a faulty rectifier (I don't see any change in voltage from "off" to "idle" to "slight goose of the throttle"). In that video, I believe the max I got up to is about 3/4 throttle (actually a little less). On the GPS, we saw 36mph, but once again I believe I was under 3/4 throttle (nervous about opening it up without the tach).

I need to dial it in still. The plugs are what were in the motor when I got it, and a couple of the wires are not in the greatest shape. Also, the idle needles were set on the muffs  . I need to give those a tweak out on the water. On a couple of hole shots, I noticed a "very" slight stumble, but she picked up great.

"There is about a 1/2" by 1" chunk out of one blade.."

Even if you can't feel the vibration, your gears can. Why not fix or replace that prop before something else goes too.

Re: Hole Shot Video - My Larson XL5

before you ruin the lower unit have the prop rebuilt or by a new one. it will help you hole shot also. what you doing now is like taking off with you foot lightly on the brake.

Thanks everyone. I will definately get the prop situation rectified ASAP.
Based on my description and the video, should I try a new 17" pitch prop, or change to something else?
BTW, there is also one of those hydrofoils on the motor. Do you think I'm better off removing it?

Re: Hole Shot Video - My Larson XL5

Hard to tell on answering your question. I'm going by the speed at which you popped out, the acceleration of the engine, high speed sound on plane and convergence and size (amplitude) of the wake. You are definitely not running too much pitch (overpropped). Now are you on the otherside? Maybe and if so you would need to go up in pitch.

That engine is not lugging; however, before you can put any numbers to it, you need some accurate data.

Mark
