Hey all, im trying to get by brother in law's boat in the water, everything works fine, except i noticed a small perfectly round hole about 4 inches in front of the water inlet on the starboard side of the lower unit. its a little smaller than 1/8" and water drips out of it when on the muffs, is this an intentional hole or do i have a problem?

also the exhause bellows that connects to the drive has a bunh of holes in it on the bottom, it looks like it could have been made that way, but i think it has been rubbing when the drive it tilted up and down and may have worn through on each rib. Is this a problem? i mean the water and exhaust get to the same place either way right?

THanks!

Yep, The bellows with the slits in the bottom are an updated version from the original. Its supposed to help the exhaust pressure..

Normal OMC, the more you read in here, the more paranoid these people will make you.

Re: holes in cobra outdrive

I put a new exhaust bellows on mine and discovered that it did not even have one for many years.

Back in the 90's my brother added a Corsa Captains Call exhaust diverter and when the guy installed the y-pipe etc he didn't bother to install an exhaust bellows.

My brother ran the boat for 10 years or so without the exhaust bellows and didn't even know it. He did tell me that he thought it strange that at idle he had exhaust bubbles around the transom but thought it was normal...

When I bought the Transom repair kit it came with a new one and it had the holes already in it with instructions to mount it with the holes located at "6 o-clock"

I'm not paranoid about my OMC King Cobra at all!.....It's doing just fine sitting on the floor.

Cheers,

Rick

THanks guys. Oddly enough working on this cobra is a treat, my '74 sea ray has a stringer, want to talk about paranoid! So the little tiny hole on the lower unit is normal? what purpose does this serve?

Isn't it a drain hole? I'm no expert but I used to have an OMC and water would come out when on the muffs. Also, a question for the experts....Shouldn't you be careful when putting the boat on the muffs to leave that hole uncovered by the muffs since it is so close to the fresh water intakes on the drive?

More than likely it is an open cavity that the designers did not want water to freeze in.
