One site I found a guy used a harmonic balancer off of an old v8 powered car (I think the one he used was off a Cadillac. So long as it is balanced (rather than having some offset weight to balance the engine it came from), you should be fine. He had the balancer mounted on the crankshaft of the engine above the lower unit. His was direct drive.
I have a early 90s Toro recycler mower I hope to build an outboard with. It has a clutch on it (so when you let go of the bar the blade stops, but engine runs), is pretty quiet for a Briggs built engine (it's not the suzuki that came on some. It's a OHV engine Briggs made for Toro to my understanding), and idles low. There always seems to be a lot of lower units at the scrap metal place. Any "lower unit junkyard buyers guide" tips that I should look for?
