hose connection running

Looking at a Ev 115 motor for sale. The guy showing the motor hooked up a hose to it and it ran but....

Please, in some detail, explain to me the PROPPER way to do these hose connections...

...he had the water on and hooked up but I didn't see where water was supposed to positively exit after circulating and hopefully cooling the engine. Where is the exit port? Was it on th other side of where he connected the hose, assumably the proper intake for this test? A little "pee" stream evetually came out a bit above this one connection ....but things did not look right to me. The hot gauge came on at the dash too. I had him shut it down.

He appeared to have hose or water "muffs" devices but I don't think the hook ups were right. Help please so I can get the pre-purchase test/evaluation done without him hurting this motor, and hurting it by showing it to others who may be wanting to buy it before I do...if I do. I will explain to him the right way tommorrow if it isn't right....but something's wrong with the hot light comming on.

Re: hose connection running

There is just one place to hook the muffs to. Just above the prop on both sides of the lower unit is intake ports.usually four holes in a vertical line and a plastic screen visible through the holes.
With the muffs hooked up water will spray out around this area as well as force it through the water pump and engine.
You should see a good stream out of the tell tale (pee hole) as soon as the engine fires.
It sounds like this motor has a bad impeller at the least.
If he is serious about selling he should drop the lower and at least inspect it.

Re: hose connection running

Hot light on dash suggests it is a late '60s - early '70s vintage, right?? If so, they don't have a pee hole. but water should blow out the holes in the back, below the powerhead. There will also be water coming out the center of the propeller, along with exhaust.

Is the paint on the cylinders and heads burnt or discolored? If it is, that motor has been run hot and you should run too....away, that is.

Water discharge while running on muffs is not an indicator that the water pump is working, only that the pump is turning. There is a big difference.

Re: hose connection running

Hey thanx for helping me here guys,

Hot Dash light makes it that old? Maybe somethings amiss. Here's what the tags/plates and owner say about the age:

The motor is an 1998 Evinrude 115 SPL, the boat and trailer are 1998. Boat is a 20' Neptune SunBird.... so it says on the boat. I can take some pics of critical things...VIN numbers etc to confirm this. I wouldn't know who to ask other than post it in here.

I'm going over to do a compression check tomorrow and will check the "lower unit". What should I look for...water, sludge, something worn, gears etc? The guy says he has plenty of tools and is eager for me to do all this and what is needed to check it out. Any pointers for what to look for..again I will take pics to post here if that helps.

Also, how can I tell what prop and what pitch on it? Is this data stamped on the prop?

Thanx BCM
